Is it just me, or does Ascension sound like another bout of Soap-Fi?

So i finished watching this "waste of space on my dvr" show

What a friggen tedious task!!!!

As soon as the little girl said something about "its like everything is just stretched over something else--like a skull" (about 30 minutes in) I guessed they were not really in space. Didn't quite get the part of the "today" part of the plot (those in todays world) until a bit latter

What a stupid show! what reason is there to pay attn to anything inside of the ship when it is all pointless?

once they are told they are being lied to-none of it matters; the SES structure, the ranks or systems of living--all pointless

And the ideas--
I see pieces of others movies all through--
I see THE VILLAGE in the notion of leaving chaos (leaving earth) to live isolated and 'protected' instead.

I see every space based show in the rank structure and power struggles

I see procedural crime dramas disguised in sci fi

I see other shows in the "flower power" myth child --even without her hair blowing for no reason (SG1, falling skies)

I see LOGANS RUN in the fact that I DIDN'T SEE any old people on board--will we be shown in the future that those of a certain age walk themselves into a "recycler"?
etc,etc

So if it gets to be a series, let me guess----

the women who killed agent Amazonia is some kind of cultist who has whacky beliefs in "xyz"

the runaway guy will become some type of twisted and flawed "hero" who quest to save the rest of the crew

eventually, a rumor will spread on the ship of the truth and we will see factions develop--the CPT and his wife-to secure their power, will align with the guy in charge outside, to ensure that the experiment continues-so long as they get to remain in power

oh, and the shipping will continue at full throttle

the end with Gault being teleported to some other planet tells me that perhaps we will see an alien species introduced OR that somehow the geeks have found a way to turn the experiment into some type of wormhole device....

oh, and the shipping will continue at full throttle

That statement of yours could not be a truer statement! I had to preserve it for posterity, and having a real plaque with a gold plate was going to be a lot more expensive!

Okay, I watched a little over of an hour of this show and gave up. It really is as bad as everyone has been saying. The story is just so...lame. It should have been titled "Exercises in Bad Writing". The interpersonal angst and gratuitous (and pointless) sex was incredibly boring. And don't get me going about the annoying brat with mental problems that they've got running around the place. :rolleye0014:

At any rate, I fear the prediction that this will be turned into a TV show might come to pass. SyFy seems hell bent on ignoring science fiction fan's needs. They've even gone so far as to squash any genuine fan interaction with their website. So it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they went full speed ahead with their version of Mad Men. :moody:

the show's existence is just maddening to me (of course, i dont have a "real life" so i can afford to get mad at these things :icon_lol:)

thinking about it more---syfy has given a huge middle finger to sci fi fans in cloaked meanings

like how the ship really isn't

that it is just an exercise where the passengers haven been born into the dupe--just as we have been sucked in to watching it in their pretense of sci fi

that is the 'pointless' part i was referring to before.

and add EUREKA to the list of shows it reminds me off--that is, shows that have been ripped off from

Dumb miniseries. Crew had no scientists, scientific objectives/mandates. But sex and parties? Sure! Cause that's what the second generation of 'supposed' geniuses is all about. If there was a single actual scientist or mathematician, they would've figured it all out easily through simple observation. There are no engineers either apparently. Sick and tired of how BSG has tainted all of the 'serious' sci-fi SyFy puts out.

I loved BSG, but I HATE the way SYFY,and some others, have been constantly attempting to replicate the show

BSG-for those of us who did like it-worked because the TPTB's apparently had no clearly cut written ahead of time "plan", but what they did turned out well despite that

Ppl have been trying to replicate their mistakes intentionally and you can nearly never replicate serendipitous events

(how many times has anyone been able to duplicate the fortunate that comes out of disaster?)

AND--the biggest diff. AT LEAST BSG was in space, on real ships with the 'shipping' happening as a side show of the main events

crap like ASCENSION (or DEFIANCE,DOMINION, SGU etc) starts out with shipping and meaningless sex scenes in another attempt to duplicate the past--they are soft-porn with sci fi props and sets

and, ASCENSION has no real ship and only pretends to be a sci fi show when it is really just another play on LAW AND ORDER (but LO is so much better)--crime drama masked as sci fi

ASCENSION is a show with a fake ship with a duped crew on a channel that now pretends to have sci fi on it

Man, I was completely stupefied back then and still am completely stupefied at how BSG got to be so popular. I used to look up best sci-fi show lists on google and look at the lists. Anytime I'd see BSG on the list, I'd just close that page. Freaking ridiculous how popular it is.

Whatever happened to writing likable characters. They seemed to be pushing that black dude to be a main character and the one everyone is supposed to root for, but he freaking bangs another man's wife on the side. How am I supposed to root for this character at all? And little girl with magical knowledge? So contrived and convoluted. I laughed at how the 'scientists' were hoping for something like this to happen. Really? You did this whole experiment hoping a little girl would develop magical powers? Really? Such bs.

I totally agree. :) And the thing is, the ratings were really not all that great. It's spinoff didnt even make it a full year, and it was just not all what Syfy thinks it is. Because they think NuBSG is the pinnacle of modern science fiction, everything they make or approve will be measured against it in some way and that is why everything they have made recently is donkey poop.

Its ridiculous on every level. How they made it to actual broadcasting is still a mystery to me. Is nobody sitting in the pre-screenings saying "Um, this isnt really that good"?

I'm guessing they originally planned it to be a pilot for a show, then opted for a mini-series instead.

Isn't that basically lowering the bar right to the ground? It's like giving every player a "trophy" on both teams of a little league game.

No, the original plan was to run the six episode miniseries (~60 min/episode) and then get approval for a second season.

Potential future seasons
Although the show was ordered as a miniseries, it could potentially run for multiple seasons, similar to the network's popular series Battlestar Galactica. If it does well, Levens stated that he already has ideas for future seasons in mind.

Pretty much covers it. I don't watch Sci Fi shows because I care about who is doing who.
Frankly, I don't give a damned. It's not *supposed to be* important to the story. In some cases, such as Haven, the fact that Nathan & Audrey love each other is relevant, because it provides motivation for each of them to do whatever is needed to get the other back from whatever danger they're in. But its handled with class. Have we ever seen gratuitous sex (on-screen or implied) from Haven?
I have finished P1 of Ascension, and started to watch P2 at least 3 times now, and each time I found my attention wandering.
Dunno if I'll ever get through it all. Fortunately, the DVR has a huge drive on it, so I can just leave it there for a while.

I gave up on Defiance 3 weeks in... Ok, alien pr0n. Can do without that.
Tried Lost Girl, but that goes beyond soft porn, if you ask me. Pass on that.
Continuum was very good.. but alas, like Haven, it is going away.
The only shows the SyFy network seems to favor are those that are mostly about the he'in and she'in. Those that aren't don't fare well.

Wa - hooah. After reading some of these posts there will excitement galore at my house when the CBC televises this in February. Just as in when they made SGU, why didn't they do a re-boot of Starlost and give that show a proper budget?
