That's actually a parasite plant. It's a climber using the tree stem as, well, a climbing pole. The other trees next to this one have the same climbers around them as well. It can look cool, especially if the climber is a nice looking flowering species, but the trees can actually die from this when the climbers overgrow all the branches blocking out the sunlight for the tree itself.
