That's what the farmers here use.
make sure you get plnety of 'brown matter' into your compost pile
veg and fruit waste alone isn't enough for a good balance for gardening purposes
shredded brown leaves from any deciduous tree or bush, grass clippings (from a lawn that is not chem treated), aged wood chips (fresh chips will steal nitrogen from your pile), unwaxed paper and cardboard (paper towel and toilet paper--those cardboard rolls they come on are great), cardboard egg cartons, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags
all are example of 'brown matter' and will add great balance to your compost as well as attract worms so you can get worm castings into the mix as well
and no need to cover a pile--you will see that this is listed as 'necessary', it is not. we have three active piles now all of diff ages and none are covered.
if your area is dry you need to add some water now and again as well
it is weird, but making your own soil is kind of addictive
