Interesting...I wonder how those holes are created?

Like it mentioned in the article, possible reason for collapse is rotting trees below. While in some soils, wood can be "petrified" preserved and hardened, sand ain't one of them

But the holes are persistent...in sand. How?

Diferent wood/trees, diff rates of decomp. Pine and other evergreens may rot more quickly than hardwoods like maple or oak, etc. So it would rot at different rates, settle and than rot more, settle, repeat.

Not saying that it is the reason, just a possibility. That is why one should never use wood/trees as a fill material
