I was hopeful for Interstellar when I heard Kip Thorne was involved. Alas, the movie comes off like a riff on 2001: A Space Odyssey made by someone who watched that film but did not understand what they watched at all.

And....welcome to GateFans!

So you saw it too? It was a real disappointment for me...I gotta say. I definitely see the connection to 2001, and it sorta seems like the writers were going for an "explained" version of it, but the explanation was indeed like that of somebody who watched 2001 and did not "get it", then took that stunted understanding and made Interstellar from it.

Yeah, that's what one gets for participating in a group trip to the theater - you pretty much have to watch what the group watches.

I still have not seen it . A friend did and his first words were ( it's a real long movie ) . Nothing else was said .
Guess I'll hold off then and wait for the small screen .

:) :) :)

You should watch it...just to know you watched it. :) Its....strange. But I dont think it intended to be. I think the writers were hoping that it would be hailed as the new 2001 or have a similar impact on the viewing audience, and instead they created a head cocking mess.

It just left me flat - no love no hate really nothing. It's like I said a bit back - it felt like the writers watched 2001: A Space Odyssey but did not understand it and then tried to make their own version of it. BTW, I didn't especially like 2001 myself - I thought 2010 was a better film...:encouragement:

Same with me. And I did not want to rewatch it. I liked 2001 only after reading the original book and then watching the movie about 4 times. I cant bring myself to watch Interstellar again.

Guess I like a long drawn out story lol . It had the 2001 feel to it like you guys mentioned and I really like 2001 so that may have been the reason for liking this movie . The visuals were pretty cool and I thought they did a good job on the black hole though they never really explain how they go through it without getting crushed to smitherines . Michael Caine was his usual wonderful self and a very likeable character that we did not see enough of . Maccognut was ok in it . Working on my impersonation of him by the way and he is easy to impersonate lol . Ann Hath was really good here and of course good ole Matt Damo wrecks everything as usual . He plays nut job very well . John Lithgow was also wonderful to see . Did you notice the line he used from 2010 ? I caught it and it made me smile .
I liked the father daughter connection being a dad myself . It had Contact written all over it though did it not ?

:) :) :)

Maybe the reputation around here isn't something to get excited about. How did it get that high this fast?

We used to be more heavily into giving rep around here but since we updated to the latest Xenforo template we've all sort of defaulted to using the "Agree" or "Like" type of emoticons on each post.

I really liked it, good depiction of actual and theoretical physics, tidal wave forces, relativity and the damning effects, and other good stuff. TARS and the other bots were awesome, loved the 2001 references. Best hard sci-fi movie in years to me.

At first I laughed at the design of the robots when they were first introduced in the movie. The robot was doing a bad cop interview which I found ridiculous and hilarious. But later on, I was able to witness how freaking useful and effective they were, and their designs was very awesome. Loved their humour.

Also
Fucking Matt Damon from out of nowhere! Man, when he got shot out of the ship after he tried to get in, I jumped.

I had read "Do not go gentle into the good night" long time ago and liked the many metaphorical aspects that poem could be read as. Was pleasantly surprised at how it was used in the movie. Hopefully, the youth of this generation will rage, rage against the dying of the light (in this case, the light being math and science education, and how they've become very infected with capitalistic/business influences).

Case in point, your post just got one "like" and one "agree".

You can't have much science without capitalism.

Yes you can. It was that way long before there was money. Only unnecessary "desired" technology needs money.
