and here is another thing that still nags me about ALL of the streaming original content --with exception to a few shows

this is the future of tv. so WHY THE HELL does NF, amazon ,hulu, etc make their OC shows to the old tv format? where an hour is 43 minutes or so?

some dino in the corporate offices hoping for syndication on local UHF? :)

It doesn't make sense

That deducted time is for commercials (even when not there).

i know that is what it was for on traditional tv, there is no need for it on streamer OC shows though

Most likely for when those shows get sold to syndication to be aired on commercial channels. The extra time will be used for commercials and most likely they will cut scenes and speed up the tape in order to cram in more. Yay! :moody:

Hulu is using that 15-20 minutes for commercials, as is CBS All Access and just about every streaming service (at the base level of services). Netflix will be there soon enough, since their current model based on expansion of the subscriber base is slowing significantly. The shows are still making room for commercials whether or not the time is used for them, and that makes more sense than forcing the affiliates to spend money on butchering up an hour long episode to fit commercials in.

I'm not a fan of the way syndicated shows are butchered to fit (more) commercials, but it's a sad reality of the industry. I don't think commercials are going away anytime soon. Streaming services are going to be using the Hulu model more and more; the type of service that allows commercials in order to give subscribers a lower price point. Just look at the shit show that cable and satellite TV have become. They make you pay a monthly fee for service but then nearly every channel is a commercial one. The streaming services are going to go this way also (hopefully with the option to go commercial-free with a higher price point).

I'm not sure what effect the Netflix model will have on the streaming industry in the long run but I don't see commercials disappearing completely due to their influence. I think things are still shaking out with Netflix and I won't be surprised to see them eventually offer a lower price point service that includes commercials. After all, there is no corporation that is going to turn down profits from both ends of the spectrum, subscribers and commercials.

It costs money to pay a video editor to cut an hour down to 45 minutes without losing continuity. Why should the client be forced to do it when it can come pre-edited for commercials?

The whole streaming service is a big pile of shit intended to bring in dumber content to dumber audiences that are too stupid/happy and fat to think that they are being screwed around. Stop giving them air time and free press and publicity. They are all shit! Good TV died a longtime ago.

Thank goodness for hard drive media archives. :) I have enough good stuff from before 2010 to entertain me for years without streaming a single thing. There are good things that come out, then they fade. But about 90% of every new media project is a piece of crap.

why have commercials in show?

i know many nations-korea being one, where there are no commercials in show, you get a full hour or more of content. there are then about 5 mins of commercials in between shows

There are many nations like that. Usually socialist nations. But American companies are not trying to sell billions of dollars of goods to South Korea, so why reserve commercial spots for sale to companies? Korea is nothing like the United States. In the US, we even get commercials when pumping gas or paying to go see a movie. The space for commercials is there because the money is in the United States as well as the companies who can afford the slots.

first south korea is not a socialist country, it is probably more capitalistic then us

second, american companies market their ass off in korea

as far as advertising goes..they are pretty far ahead of us. they really do not need to use tv. they have interactive ads, where you walk by a sign in the subway or on the street, some program gets a feed from your phone (if enabled) and then plays ads targeted to your purchase/browsing history

Yes, I know that. :) I did not say that Korea was socialist. I said that most of the countries which do not use much TV advertising are socialist, which is true.

Yes, but we are talking about TV advertising and the space made for them in TV media which is on the market for broadcasters to buy.

yes, and i am saying, if they found a way to move beyond reliance on tv advertising, then why can't we?

Too much competition, too many corporations, each run by thousands or millions of shareholders looking for a return on their investments. TV advertising will die because it is no longer giving much of a return on investment (ROI), and the TV medium itself is dying in terms of a programmed form. On-demand services are staying free of commercials by charging more for people who want the "premium" no commercials versions of services. Everybody else gets bombarded with visual spam. :)
