Yes, they did. The aliens were accustomed to hearing the whale songs from many light years away from earth, that is why they traveled to earth when the whale songs stopped.

Where did you get that idea? They did NOT say that in the movie.

What they said was that the probe was probably sent to determine why they lost contact. Not that it was sent when the whale songs stopped.

True. And what they sent was a probe. We all know it was done as an excuse to make it (the crisis) about the whales, but it was actually the standard "save the earth" trope wrapped in the whale story. TVH was basically the "lighthearted comedic" film in the pre-reboot set. I liked it, despite it's shortcomings. :)

How could they have had contact to begin with, if the whale songs were not being carried by outer space? Are you saying that the whales were in telepathic communication with the aliens? If so, then this is better than sound traveling in outer space, but not by much.

They didn't specify exactly how contact was going on. For all we know the whales had a subspace transmitter buried somewhere under the sea floor. The point is that nowhere do they claim the aliens heard whale song across space. All that they say is contact was lost. So it is open to be read in either a Science Fiction or Fantasy way. Since the other elements in the film are not Fantasy there is no reason to read this in a fantasy way.

Yes, but nothing was said as to how they were "hearing" them. Given that these aliens were here long ago, it is possible they may have left behind some kind of technology to keep in contact.

They never offered an explanation. Either tech or telepathy is possible.

What if aliens visited the earth long ago and the whales learned from them and thrived because of them, then they (the aliens) left? Whales and other cetaceans are amongst the most intelligent of all animals, even humans. The aliens were checking up on them. Whale song cannot carry into outer space, but it can carry several hundred kilometers through open ocean. Alien probes might be able to pick it up even further away.

It was not that big of a deal, man! The movie was not about only those whales. :) Plus, Catherine Hicks was cute in her role as Gillian.
