Firefly - SGU and De-evolution

I see that there is some speculation as to whether or not there will be a 3rd season of BattleGate90210 and I am reminded of the short lived (14 episodes) of Firefly.

There is no comparisson between the shows. Firefly was stuffed full of quotable & clever lines, with heroic and complicated characters with compelling story lines. As put in the show, they were "big damn heroes".

Firefly was not aired in its proper order and was pre-empted on a few occasions which badly hurt it's ratings. It continues to grow in popularity even though it's short life began and ended 8 years ago!

I think these two shows demonstrates our de-evolution when SGU can get 2 seasons even though they have a small audience and a show like Firefly doesn't even see a complete season!

I wish you wouldn't post pictures like that. Very distracting :D

Huh? I thought the picture was the point of the thread. Wait.....what were we talking about again?

I laugh in the general direction of anybody who argues for SGU in a SGU vs. Firefly debate.

Yes one of the greatest Sci-Fi tragedies, beyond the death of the super charismatic and talented Don S. Davis, is the premature termination of Firefly.

Firefly may have eventually de-evolved in later seasons, but all of Sci-Fi was robbed of finding out for ourselves. 14 episodes of Gold. Aweomse CG, great acting, humour, action .... ROAR!!!!

Serenity the movie was cool, but it left me with the bitter taste of finality to the series.

RIP Firefly.

Firefly totally rocks!!
Now that's a show that should be picked up again somehow.
Sort of like cowboys in space.
Too many angles have been left wide open.
Bring back Firefly! Yahooo! I mean, Yihaaaa!

Wow, I hadnt seen all the episodes of Firefly, and I just got the 4DVD set of the whole season and it ROCKS! I cant believe how different it is when you can watch it marathon style! It see so much of the source material that SGU ripped off from it. The corridors in the ship are virtually identical, as is the level of lighting in most of the ship. Even the bit of shaky cam, but its only BARELY shaking and adds a lot to Firefly. There are very few shots taken from behind furniture or bulkheads like the person watching is hiding behind shit watching the action. And the characters are likable AND good looking. Morena Baccharin is fantastic. She is so different from Adria in SG-1 and also Anna in V. And Jewel Staite...she is a child of Firefly, not Atlantis. I think she was brought in because Firefly was canceled and she had a following. All the women in the show are hot as hell and sexy and yet strong. The guys in the show are good looking, and the ship is good looking. Just enough balance of dark and gritty with humor and action and special effects. Even the music was great. I love this show!

WHY did they cancel this show? I cant believe it. Its what happens when you allow marketing types and bean counters to decide the fate of a show instead of artists and leaders. :icon_e_wink:

This show is so different. Its great because its Firefly and not a copy of something else.

This show is on my list but I do not have the time at the moment to watch it. Maybe over Christmas when I have a few days off.

Im in the middle of a Firefly marathon right now (watching the episode Shindig now). Its such a great show when seen continuously like a marathon. Just awesome! Somehow, they TOTALLY get away with strangely simple sets, horses and rifles as well as pistols and cowboy hats...but in space. And the ships are so awesome. I just cant rave enough about it. Even the music is awesome. Its a MUST SEE. :joy:

The reevers are also a great enemy
even though you dont see them close up so to speak and there no dialogue with them (from what i remember)
and Serenitys premise and explanation of the reevers is a great twist.

This show is so good, I cant stop watching it! If I have to go to the bathroom, I pause it so not to miss ONE MINUTE of it. The characters are so much deeper and more complex than in SGU and Craprica. BSG 2.0 characters were in the same league, in my opinion. But the mix of people and their premise is so cool. I watched episodes when it was on the air, but I missed a few. After getting this DVD set and watching it from the beginning (I missed the premiere episode Serenity). This show is awesome.

My only nitpics so far is Summer Glau's character River. She is too schizo for my taste. Yeah, I wonder what was done to her brain, but the weird wandering into scenes and suddenly speaking or tripping out is sorta annoying me. I love Kaley (Jewel Staite). She is so cute, so perky. The acting chemistry between her and Anara (Morena Baccharin) is great. They canceled this show after 14 episodes?

AND they showed the episodes out of order...

The network really screwed up w/ Firefly. They showed the episodes out of order (which was just plain stupid, or deliberate sabotage perhaps? Of course I can't claim to know the real reasons) - and they cancelled the show before it had been discovered by a lot of people. The fact the show's fanbase is still growing today speaks to the great opportunity the shortsighted network execs missed.

Firefly had great characters, great music, great writing, and great acting! It was the total package. Loved it. Although, I must say I didn't like episode fourteen and I can see why due to some of the content in that episode it wouldn't have gone over very well on a mainstream network (if I remember correctly it was never aired, but is on the DVD). So if future episodes were to continue in that direction, I'm not sure I would still be such a huge fan of the show. Now, we'll never know :(

I do have one logical complaint about the Reavers, but I excuse it because the story is so good. But here it is. Anyone have thoughts on it? Some explanation I'm missing or something?

It doesn't make sense there are so many Reavers! If they are so out of control agressive, how do they calm down enough to ever do anything requiring brainpower for their own survival? Also, if they fly around without containment with no regard for their own lives, how come they all aren't dying really fast? How are there so many after ten years? Also, if they are always cutting on themselves and sporting open wounds, how come they don't die from infections? It makes no sense to me. Does the PAX also make them immune to infection?

Im still in my marathon mode. I havent seen all the episodes yet, and I am on Disc 3, the episode called "War Stories". They showed the episodes out of order? No wonder it seems so different! This show is absolutely amazing and now I see why it makes every science fiction aficionado's favorites list. I am in love with ALL of the characters, the premise, the ship, and surprisingly...Jewel Staite as the ship's engineer/grease monkey. Morena Baccharin's character Anara (Inara?) is awesome. The chemistry between captain Mel and the rest, as well as Zoe and her hubby the pilot are great. It has just enough humor, dark and gritty story lines, and plot twists to make you want to see it all the way through.

PLUS, it was UNIQUE. No other show I can think of even comes close to its premise. The closest thing I could come to would be a vague relationship to Han and his Millennium Falcon, but with lots more science and a larger ship and crew. But that is only a VAGUE similarity at best. Its great! Truly creative writing and production using low cost sets, and great CGI.

The Reavers have only cropped up once and I only saw a survivor who went bonkers and started acting like a Reaver. I am still watching the episodes!

Serenity! The movie was awesome, and also the epitome of dark and gritty.

I love Firefly. Its just awesome beyond words what they were trying to do with that show. The movie Serenity was a great ending for the show, but it also left opening for another if it comes up.

I cant help but wonder if the reason why Jewel Staite and Morena Baccharin found their way into Stargate Atlantis was because they were in Firefly. At the time, Firefly was unique and its fans were orphaned. In SGU, I wonder of Chloe filled a spot that TPTB wanted for Summer Glau, since they look so similar as was pointed out in the lookalikes thread:

chloesummer.png

River's powers seem to be finding their counterpart in Chloe's surfacing abilities with regard to alien technology, "reading Daniel Jackson's notes", and weird transferred fish people powers. Well, the movie was great, and I watched a marathon of all 14 episodes this past weekend. What a show...no wonder it makes the favorites list of so many! :)

the problem with "Firefly" was that on Cartoon Network was a a Anime called "Outlaw Star". "Outlaw Star" finished its plan 2 Season run. Meaning it only had 2 Seasons because that's how most Japan Anims run in japan. But the problem was "Firefly" was matching what "Outlaw Star" had already done. Joss Whedon was asked about why "Firefly" looked way to much like "Outlaw Star". But we still don't have any answers on that.

I dunno. I have always separated cartoons (anime) from real live action, and I do not compare them. But I realize that a lot of people do. I never saw a single episode of Stargate Infinity, and the Star Trek animated series did not appeal to me like the real life show did. Do people really count animated movies as part of canon, when there is a live-action counterpart? Interesting.

There were rumors for years that Firefly might return, but it looks like Joss Whedon got Avengers movie.

America Anime and Japan Anime are seen as two different ways. America Anime Mostly have been like seen as Kids shows, There are a few not apart of this Like "Batman: The Animated Series" and "ExoSquad". Both dealing with life and death. Meaning people die. Like "ExoSquad" where Earth and all it's outer planets get taken over by the Neosapiens genetically engineered Human race. And the most likely reason for this is they have no sexual organs. And a lot of people die in this show, mostly off camera or in large explosions, or just having there E-Frames hit by Rocket fire. And even a few EPs where a small group of Crew member Mutiny and take over the Resolute, leading to the death of there head Mutiny guy "Capt. Matthew Marcus" and the Resolute being destroyed.

But in Japan it's a no holds bar. There's good anime and just down right porn anime, or Horror film with faces getting ripped off. And yes they even have there own kids like shows. And Good Anime like "Out Law Star", and no "Out Law Star" is not porn, even that it did have Nudity, but was edit out by Cartoon Network, as well as the guy getting shot in the face and dying. But "Out Law Star" did have then finding a special Girl with special powers in a Box much like was in "Firefly", and "Out Law Star" came way WAY before "Firefly" hit the airwaves. And sadly I'm not kidding when I say there was Japan Anime Porn, and no I didn't watch any of them.

This was the show that alerted me to Joss Whedon. I never got into buffy or Angel as a teenager but when Firefly rolled around I missed the boat until the movie Serenity came out. I bought the complete season and ended up buying a copy for myself, my cousin, two uncles and then the collectors edition came out and I picked up the movie again. I desperately hoped that they would renew the show but browncoats everywhere are still disappointed in Fox for torpedoing this show. Every cancelled show since has referenced Firefly as an example of failed executives meddling in perfectly good television.

You are in for a GREAT sci fi western adventure!

I started watching this show (finally!) this weekend, and it was a very pleasant surprise to me. I love all of the characters, and Kaylee is GREAT!!! :)

The Keller character on SGA made me think that Jewel wasn't a good actress at times, and barely decent at others. But Kaylee is like your little sister (or a good friend that's like a little sis to you) that you just want to take care of. :) I'm about halfway through after watching the 90 min Serenity pilot. Joss Whedon did well with this one.

Firefly is AWESOME! Its good you are seeing it for the first time AFTER the demise of Stargate Universe. You will see why the Stargate showrunners wanted both Jewell State and also Morena Baccharin (LOVED her Inara character in Firefly). The crew of Serenity has that family feel to it, and Kaylee is just so cute you just want to take care of her (like you said). Note also how the interior of Serenity looks. Sorta steampunk, but not overdone. SGU ripped off stuff from the look of Serenity. But I wont soil this thread with comments from "that show" :)

You are gonna LOVE this series! And make sure you have freshly popped popcorn and a warm spot to watch the final movie when it comes time. Its GREAT! By the time its done, you wont think of Summer Glau as Gollum again. :)
