Anyone else notice that Chrome has a new look?

of course i may be--and probably am, way behind on this

i try to re-install chrome a couple times a year since the 'updates' that are sent never seem to have the same effect as a complete uninstall and reinstall

tabs are different and the home page tiles can now be manually entered in.

what else has been changed? anything useful?

thanks again for tolerating the caveman!! :fredflinstone:

Interesting. I see some cosmetic changes, but since I run a reverted computer (Windows 7, because I know it like the back of my hand), I am not running the Windows 10 version of it. Mine looks the same as it always did. :)

that us what i was wondering-cosmetic yes..why? what's the point

but, i do like that i can now enter in manually by URL paste, my "tiles" and then name them what i want

wondering if anything changed that is meaningful?

i do notice that when going from tab to tab, there is no delay now. i noticed in the chrome i was using, the short delay..sometimes just long enough to get that spinning 'windows thinking circle' on my screen

when my homepage tiles competely disappeared-with no 'undo' or 'restore all tiles' button anywhere to be found, that is when i re-installed

thanks

Again, interesting...

The homepage tiles in Chrome are placed by how often you visit a page, and you have no direct control over them. The only thing that would make them disappear is if you somehow deleted ALL of your browsing data. You can delete the tiles, but new ones have to be generated by visiting a site several times. I would suggest the more direct approach of turning on your bookmarks bar and placing your favorite sites on it yourself, without having Google pick them for you. But we are already past that...

Things every Chrome user should do as soon as it is installed (under the three dots, Settings, Advanced):

  • Make the Home button visible
  • Make the Bookmarks Bar visible
  • Turn off: Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed
  • Turn off: Automatically send some system information and page content to Google to help detect dangerous apps and sites
  • Turn off: Allow sites to check if you have payment methods saved

Go to: https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity

Go to Activity Controls and turn off:

  • Web and App activity
  • Location History
  • Device Information
  • Voice and Audio Activity
  • YouTube Search History
  • YouTube Watching Activity
  • Ad Personalization
Leaving all of that on and at the default settings allows Google to track you and your behaviors and interests as easily as a tagged Caribou. Google algorithms (with this information) can determine your political affiliations, your daily goings on down to intimate details like your clothing sizes, your marital status, your sex and gender, your age, where you work, your work hours, how many mobile and wired devices you own, where you bank, who provides your utilities and a whole lot more if you shop using Chrome. If you watch porn using Chrome, they can even tell your sexual orientation. By coupling this data with that of other users who are using your devices or using devices in the same spaces and locations as you are, they can determine who your friends and family are, what they like, even if they are cheating on you or secretly having affairs. It even gets your voiceprint. With "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" on, Google can continue to gather this info even after the browser is closed. Even if you switch to a different browser to surf.

To those who don't make these tweaks, I say: You deserve whatever happens to you for being so apathetic towards your privacy. :)

no more "turning off"?

this is what i get: pause only

and, it seems, per google, that they may still track web searches with pause turned on

with the old chrome, yes, many shortcut tiles were created by frequency of visits

but in recent months - i a mthinking it was either after the gf's https change OR when i switched to the 'new GF's' style, no matter how many times i wentt o gf's,and other sites, like my bank and youtube, a tile would not generate

you can see in my screenshot above, i had to add GF's and the weather channel i use to the 'bookmarks' below the browser bar

back to my original post.. is it possible that google somehow degrades the functionality of an older version of chrome (IF your machine could upgrade to a newer one-- so your old PC would be out) to more or less "force" yu to upgrade?

Ominous. :) But hey, Windows 10 is the first Windows OS which basically tells you to f**k off if you think you are gonna turn Windows Updates off, or prevent it from phoning home with info on your computing and surfing habits. It only follows that all of the versions of just about everything that is designed for Windows 10 is going to follow that same mentality.

From the URL I see in your screenshot, you are not in the right place. Log in to Google, then go here:

https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity

On the left, go to Activity Controls, and you will see your toggles and options there.

YES, but they can only do that starting with Windows 8.1 forward. Windows Updates has "enhanced" Windows 8.1 users with the same sort of forced updating and background monitoring that is built into Windows 10. Windows 7 is safe. If you do not allow certain updates to install, Microsoft will never be given the ability to force anything, therefore it cannot create the degradation in any of the installed programs.

I can see the day when we will have to like sign in with DNA or blood sample or something so that the then "GOOGAMAZWINDOWAPPLE" Mega corp can really get a good read on what to sell us, how to sell us and how to screw us.

The trick is to keep up with their changes, and ESPECIALLY to look at the changes themselves to determine why they are being made. Most of the time, Google is trying to enhance their information collecting methods so that they can more effectively steer you to advertisers or paid services. Even Google News places all of the big media sources with paywalls up before giving you the free ones. That is because the big guys pay them to do that. Your Google Search results will have the paid folks on the first page, so you have to scroll past them to get the independent sources. Never sleep on them, they are tricky.

next question

today i see that 'bytefence anti malware' is on my computer. i see it is a legit program but not a highly recommeended one.

i also see where it is often loaded as part of PUP (unwanted programs package ?)...any ideas?

i removed it from the programs list through uninstall, any way to keep this stuff from coming in again?

You don't need it. If you are using Chrome and Windows 10, you do not need additional malware protection. Remove it. Also NEVER run more than one anti-virus program at a time, and keep your browser plugins to a minimum.

yeah i took it off before i posted this, just was trying to figure out how it got on. i am sure it is like the one site said; that it is usually part of 'pup' package.

i was using a video to mp3 converter program and it may have come with that

what about the chromium? necessary or not?
thanks

Not necessary. If you want another browsing experience, then it's more than okay to install Firefox and Brave. I am not a fan of Opera, but you can install that too. Edge is actually a good browser, but it has too many restrictions for my taste. :)

Pausing does nothing. It still saves it and that is sold to some pervert to look at.

You can sign out completely, and open Chrome in an incognito window. Make sure that your Gmail icon is not showing as "Paused" in the upper right.
