Idris Elba as the next James Bond?

We talked about this awhile back and apparently there's some truth to the rumor we were discussing. For what it's worth I think Elba would make a great Bond. The fact that he's black is wholly irrelevant to him playing the role.

British actor Idris Elba could become the next James Bond, according to leaked Sony emails.

Elba, 42, who has starred in The Wire and Luther, could replace Daniel Craig as the next 007 when his contract ends after the next film, if leaked emails are to be believed.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal allegedly told a top executive at Columbia Pictures, which distributes the Bond films, that 'Idris should be the next bond'.

007 is an Agent Number, not the name of a person...even Reese Witherspoon could be 007. :) Idris Elba would make an AWESOME Bond. But I would have liked for Benedict Cumberbatch to have been given a chance.

Of course the next question is how long will Daniel Craig keep doing the role. They won't bounce him for anyone new as he has been so well received as Bond.

Yes, BC would make a good Bond. There are several actors out there right now that seemingly would do justice to the role.

I like DC as an actor but for me (and I know this is subjective and not indicative of a larger study) his Bond films are incredibly boring. I also tend to wonder how much of a draw he really is. Didn't MGM have a hard time coming up with the budget for filming the last Bond movie that he was in? And how much of that was due to financial hard times for the studio as a whole verses what DC could bring in as Bond?

*I'm certainly not suggesting that he's box office poison or even that he's responsible for MGM's cash flow problems a few years back, but maybe someone new in the role would really reinvigorate the franchise? :daniel_new004:

Actually all the financial issues were on MGM, which held up Skyfall until they could be resolved.

As to Craig and boxoffice, his three Bond films are the #1, #2 and #3 grossing films in the entire series. And the gross has increased with each film culminating with Skyfall propelling the series into previously unheard of realms as it grossed 1.1 billion. When boxoffice tracks that way you know the franchise is in good hands.

And Craig as Bond after Skyfall has been called THE Bond by a lot of "Bondites". I tend to agree as his version of the character is by far the closest to what Ian Fleming wrote (dry, ruthless, intelligent - and a stone cold killer). I'd still rank Connery as a close second, then Timothy Dalton, then Brosnan then Roger Moore.

Plus, Craig was just signed last year to do two more Bond films, one of which (Spectre) is due out late next year. And the rumors are that the villain will indeed be Blofeld.

DC is a lot like SC so I think thats what makes him a great Bond . IE will be friggin beyond awesome as bond . I really like PB also along with RM as these two guys brought a lot of humour to the Bond character .
TD did not work for me as Bond though he is a fine actor .

Oh, nooooooooooooooooo no no on no no no! Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are worlds apart. In fact, modern Bond has little in common with classic Bond in terms of how the character is written.

The Living Daylights and Licence to kill had Bond being the closest to Ian Flemings books before the new Casino, which is why I rate Dalton 2nd best Bond behind Craig. I like Moore as well, but his Bond was way to "jokey".
Connery probably had the strongest Bond in terms of overcoming sub-par writing with pure actor talent though.

Dalton was far too dry and boring compared to Craig's Bond. Craig pulls off the stone-cold secret agent far better, IMO.

Bond -is- pretty boring in the books though.
I will admit my view of Dalton could be coloured by the sheer amount of crappy Bond before him though. :)

Sorry, guys, but I disagree. Bond isn't Doctor Who. If they're going to spontaneously change ethnicity, or even the sex, of the character then just write a new storyline about a new agent. Hollywood needs to stop f'cking with classics by making them politically correct.

You weren't into the comedic antics of Bond, I suppose. :icon_lol:

Dude, you should read some of the fits people are having over the -possibility- of a female doctor, let alone a black doctor

I do agree with you though, hell, they could do a Agents of shield style show with other MI5 agents.

They could introduce a new agent in the next Bond film, for example, then spin him/her off into a new film series as well.

For sure.
I think a series would be better, strictly from a not competing with your own franchise POV however. What they have done with Coleson in AoS has been brilliant IMHO.
