Would any of YOU- GF's tech giants-buy this machine?

So, no, I am not considered laying out $1700 for this box, but I was wondering if any of you would?

And,I get the airflow thing, but does anything else about this machine warrant its price?

NO. This thing is relying on it's cool styling and unusually shaped case and design to sell it. The people who would buy this thing are the same people who buy Apple products and people who buy Abercrombie and Fitch or spend triple money for common items which have a designer name on them. I am only interested in the guts of the thing. What type of processor? Clock speed? Memory capacity? Storage technology?

That's why I referenced the boutique thread - if I actually wanted a rig of this type (custom gaming) and was not inclined to build it myself I would go to a real boutique like Falcon Northwest or Origin PC. They have the workmanship and quality and their rigs are real screamers.

:icon_lol:

does the thing have any good specs to which you refer? memory, etc?

i can't see this company having had made more then a few hundred of these things--or else they would get soaked, i would think

Yeah, it is decent in specs, but not at the price point they want. You can get equal power in a more vanilla case for half the price.

my son told me he read somewhere --he is pretty big into his xbox 360--that after the xbox one ordeal, that microsoft is thinking about abandoning these type platforms and moving to gaming pc type platforms instead

anyone else hear about that?

I gathered that they were doing more along the line of making the Xbox One in two versions - one a gaming box with PC style internals first and a steaming box second and a much cheaper one that leans the other way.

Nothing. They sell products. If you don't use said products then it's your decision.

Me, I use MSFT at work and have Office for Mac on my Mac (and free Office from my work on my Surface Pro) because their Office software is best of breed. But then you get to my phone and I am running an aftermarket AOSP (Android Open Source Project) image on my very old smartphone. If I see something that suits my use case better I'll go in that direction.

I had not heard that officially from Microsoft, but most serious gamers I know think of any console as a toy for the mainstream. From the very beginning, PCs have always been the preferred platform of choice for gaming. There is not a console in existence that compares to a decent low end gaming computer, and on the higher end of gaming computers you have machines that outperform many enterprise servers running entire companies.

so..given the superior capabilities of a pc over a console, IS the ONLY reason you can't pop a xbox disc into a PC BECAUSE of marketing/continued sales of the consoles?

what keeps the disc from working in a pc anyhow? some type of code embedded on the disc?

Since the latest consoles moved to x86, in theory all it takes is the right software on the PC (and a good graphics card).

I mentioned in a different thread that someone had written that all the X-Box(es) were now history. That is until I started to see X-Box 1 for sale.

Maybe they were gassing the X-Box 360s?

Actually X-Box 360 was only just sunset, and they are preparing to roll out Xbox One with 4K capability.

You CAN pop the disc into the PC, and you can even play the games (technically, that is). If you run Windows 10 as the operating system, you can play Xbox One games natively and in the cloud. Using an emulator, you can play any of the console games like PSX, Playstation 2, Sega Dreamcast, etc. All the emulators are not legal. :) Gaming computers can be set to dual boot into Linux which has some awesome emulators. Still, Windows offers the best gaming. Dual booting into Windows 7 (or multiboot) gives you a gaming platform far superior to any console anywhere. Games running natively on Windows are far and away better than the very best console.

It's down to 1499 now, FYI.

I would never buy something like that. It looks stupid and inconvenient. If I were to spend a lot of money on a computer I would rather design a case of my own and have it fabricated by a specialist or something.

Do you guys use liquid cooled machines for gaming?

No. No need to do that unless your rig is an AMD based system (just don't do it!). If I don't give you any other advice, I will say PLEASE don't be tempted by AMD processors because they are so much cheaper than Intel processors. No Athlons or any other AMD processors. They have always run very hot and evidence that the manufacturers know this is the humongous CPU fans that come with them. Some of them even have dual CPU fans. If you go with AMD processors, you have to go with AMD motherboards, and Radeon GPUs (or other AMD graphics cards)

Just don't do it. Spend the extra money. Please. :)

Having said that, no you do not need liquid cooling. Mostly, those systems are for show and bragging rights. Whatever cooling scheme you set up should be easy to service. The right case and big fans will do the trick.
