Funny...when I ran mine on Windows 7, there were many packets being sent and some of them are encrypted. I use PRTG: http://www.paessler.com/ and it is a corporate license with unlimited sensors. But you get 10 sensors free forever with the trial version. This is an EXCELLENT sniffer. There are dozens for Linux.
. I am glad you are doing this, because you will be able to confirm what I am telling you. But the real killer is when Windows is "configuring updates" after a forced reboot. Normally, at this point you cant load any sniffer to see what is going on. But if that Windows machine is a VM running in VMware Workstation, you can run the sniffer between the VM and the internet using the host machine. I'll let you see for yourself what is happening.

Never said I trust MS. I don't trust any of them which is why the only stuff I keep online is stuff I don't care if someone else knows. My own stuff fits on a key drive ...

Like I said earlier, I am starting to like Windows 8 a lot. I am starting to get used to the touch interface, and with my tweaks it is acceptable. But out of the box it sucks, and on a normal desktop without touch it is out of the question. But to go further and say that Microsoft is benevolent and cares about it's end user would be false.
