It is a good thing to have that article as your guide but the best way to know is to just watch it! 
Actually I did not mind The Force Awakens. Yes the plot was derivative but it actually did a halfway decent job of setting up its new characters, looked good and tonally felt like Star Wars. Unfortunately the follow up by Rian Johnson was an abomination...
