Star Trek; Strange New Worlds, aka the CPT Pike show

They say its by popular demand, the fans spoke and CBS is listening (??)

my question is, since I dont know, it is being produced by CBS TV studios, Roddenberry Entertainment and Secret Hideout--how does that effect licensing, etc?

this is what i was talking about in the Mandalorian thread, for Trek to have any chance as a franchise, tptb's need to "disney (a verb)" the franchise,, that is make a bunch of content that supplies their streamer and hopefully get a hit that EVERYONE, fans old AND new can like, from one or two of the shows

There is no news yet on when the show will premiere or international distribution. This is a developing story so keep an eye out for updates.

It has been officially confirmed that CBS All Access has ordered a new series titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. According to CBS the show will be “based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise,” which sets the series before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds will feature Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Mr. Spock and Rebeca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their roles from the second season of Star Trek: Discovery

The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet will serve as executive producers in addition to Henry Alonso Myers (The Magicians), Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez will serve as co-executive producers. Akiva Goldsman will remain an executive producer and a key part of the creative team on Star Trek: Picard as well. Strange New Worlds will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Secret Hideout means it is still JJ-Trek as they can only use the Paramount license. Also the fact that Kurtzman and Goldsmith are writing means it will be crap.

No Secret Hideout, no Kurtzman, no Goldsmith. They need to COMPLETELY disassociate from anyone involved in the JJ-Verse. It's the only way to be confident this won't be STD redux.

1. CBS studios has nothing to do with the production of any NuTrek made by Secret Hideout, other than contractural.

2. Roddenberry Productions is a shell company created to capitalize on the Roddenberry name. Rod Roddenberry is not a writer, a creative, and has absolutely no Industry experience other than being related to Gene Roddenberry by birth. He is not an asset.

3. Every Star Trek project made by Secret Hideout has basically failed in it's mission. Besides being highly unpopular, it (Discovery) failed to drive CBS All Access signups as it's tentpole show. It cost Netflix millions, enough to fund the entire first season and to build all the sets and secure the studio retention contract with Pinewood Studios. Picard's mission was to increase viewership and drive memberships. All indications are that this has failed.

yet again, star wars fans get excited when new shows are announced, and trek fans get more pessimistic when trek shows are announced :)

There is a distinct difference.

Star Trek fans would get plenty excited by a new show IF the announcement also made it clear Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout were totally uninvolved and had nothing to do with it.

Star Wars fans were in a similar spot and only showed interest when Jon Favreau was named show runner of The Mandalorian and when it was clear Kathleen Kennedy was not directly involved. And it worked well.

If CBS/Viacom wants the fans back it is easy - terminate the Secret Hideout contract and pay any penalties then bring in someone the fans respect and let them be the King of Trek.

Exactly. And helping out on the Star Wars side, The Mandalorian showed that Disney could come out with a Star Wars show/product that appealed to the fans. I even bought myself a Baby Yoda POP! They can just as easily destroy it, but for now fans are basically okay with it and The Clone Wars S7. With Star Trek, we have gotten nothing good since Kurtzman took over. Not even remotely good.

Here is a good a place as any to post Red Letter Media's absolute evisceration of Star Trek Picard:

i was just saying it seems to be turning into a trend.. of course not one of the fan's making or choosing

Trek needs to find that "someone(s)" to take over like SW's has filoni and favrou and their crew. a crew that is defi in the ascendancy at disney/lucas with all of these new shows that they seem to be in charge of and with little to no developments on new films for intra organization competition

if the "owners" of Trek cant see they need to change course with things, then they deserve to get all the blame for killing it

There are lots of shenanigans going on behind the scenes with Star Trek and Alex Kurtzman. Despite the press release for this show and other Trek projects under Kurtzman's Secret Hideout, the reality is MUCH different. Shari Redstone will not approve any ViacomCBS funding for any new Star Trek shows, so all funding will have to come from outside investors or an international distribution deal that can collect licensing fees. My sources claim that Amazon has rejected Strange New Worlds already. That leaves the other streaming services which (I imagine) will have no interest in airing a CBS-owned show with little chance of success.

so just WHAT and WHERE are these overwhelming "fan demand" numbers at? the demand for this show that is?

published today, in yet another article --

Strange New Worlds certainly seems to be the show the Star Trek faithful want, with fan power a driving force in the series’ green light. Audiences were so taken with Captain Christopher Pike, Science Officer Spock and First Officer ‘Number One’ when the USS Enterprise warped into Star Trek: Discovery last year that they’ve been given the command codes to their own spin-off. Think Angel, Frasier or – ahem – Joey, but in the 23rd century.

“When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it,” executive producer and Trek’s TV commander-in-chief Alex Kurtzman told StarTrek.com. “These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told. The Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.”

so if this show "isn't happening" --which i dont see why CBS wouldn't slap more stuff together --they need content for their streamer and, with stuff like TWILIGHT ZONE and STD i dont think they really care what it is they get--
why continue to promote it?
