pretty basic to understand why the "new" structure--which doesn't look that new-was built where it is-pretty much on top of the villa

the saxons moved into old villas when they could and those romano-britons who didn't run to wales and inter-mixed with the saxons--and had the money to keep their property-stayed in them as well

but the tech know how for keeping those building in shape fell away and they slowly decayed, by the 10th century or so, the english were building on top of roman foundations with brick and recycled cut roman stone and wood. they either never knew or forgot how to heat the homes -from below with hot water or 'basement' furnaces, and built traditional germanic hearths mid villa and made a hole in the roman tile for exhaust. they had no roofing tile so fixed the roman work with thatch

they probably kept the mosaic as the entry piece to their new structure but it most likely got covered over time

my guess would be if they looked under many homes particularly those estates that have been occupied since saxon times, they would find similar things

Why is it that new shit can't last this long? Has anyone really wondered this? How is it that prehistoric shit is able to last for 1000s of years, but my current stuff barely manages to last a decade

Adding to more cool historical finds in England

Ruins discovered that match area and time period for whoever Arthur was based on

of course ppl do need to be reminded that whoever this handsome devil was he probably looked more like this:

Love this - so many think of "king" arthur as a medieval king instead of a (probably) Roman chieftain. Good find.

look up Romano-British general Ambrocious (spelling?)

many historians believe he is the main part of the Arthur composite

others composite types were ppl that were Laeta/ foederatii 2 or 3rd generation germanic and other (samartian like in the movie :) ) subject ppls who were brought to Britain to serve in place of "true roman" legions

Like Rac said, PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE! I did not know this factoid about King Arthur!

this factoid

which one?

it is hard to pin down an "exact time" or a person/ persons to assign the legend to

problems with written records, etc

there is,though, a lot of written info on "him" and the wars/battles that his legends are based on (the holy grail thing was added in later to get the church's blessing on a patriotic story)

his name and legend/real actions should be relied on the Welsh for the best accuracy. As he was Welsh (a saxon word assigned to any non Saxon Briton that the fought) they would have had the best motivation and probably the best record keeping of the time (as any remaining Roman Britons of note.money would have retreated to what we now call WALES)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
but, reading the history alone can get quite boring; a good historical fiction acct is written in THE WARLORD CHRONICLES by Cornwell. he sues a lot of what is known of late roman and immediate post roman britain's culture and mix of ppl's. he ties in the religious aspect as not a christian one but rather a Druidic quest to gain lost treasure-of which his arthur wants no part.

but then there is the historic/archaelogical. the wiki is pretty good:

and on Ambrosius one of the historical composite candidates:
