Firefly is a MUST SEE for any science fiction fan. There is nothing else like it.

This show was a real trailblazer. There is nothing else like it, not even similar. Every character, every episode, every story was engaging and entertaining. Some of the science was very inventive and nobody else except Joss Whedon has put these elements together in this way. Now that there is news that the show could return, I am VERY excited!

This show is on Hulu for those who can access it. Otherwise, its well worth it to rent the series at your local video store. Also, the movie Serenity. But save the movie for last! If you watch it first, it will spoil the show.

'Firefly' returning to cable; Fillion says he'd play Mal again -- EXCLUSIVE by James Hibberd

Firefly premieres on Science Channel on March 6 at 8 p.m., with the two hour pilot, followed by the first episode at 10 p.m. Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday — and, yes, in their original intended order and upgraded to high definition

Firefly is in my top ten all time favorite shows, what is better than a space western.

While I agree that Firefly is a "must see" show, I disagree that it (as a concept) is "unique" The series "Trigun", "Bravestarr" and "Cowboy beebop" did explore the "space cowboy" concept before Joss did, and as a admitted "comic junkie", it would not suprise me to think he drew on them as inspirational material (ok, bravestarr might be a stretch..........:P)

Here are the intro's for each of the 3 shows I mentioned:

BraveStarr:

Trigun:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSX58TglZRs

(Unfortunately, the Trigun intro doesn't tell you that much about the series :( )

Cowboy Beebob:

[video=youtube;dWk-VpK4hJo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWk-VpK4hJo

Hmm, this doesn't tell you that much either :(

I however can say that "space cowboys" is not a "unique concept" and all of these shows (OK, except for Bravestarr) are really worth your time to watch, even if you personally may not "click" with them.

Yep! And to think that the original Star Trek was pitched to Paramount as being sort of a "Wagon Train to the Stars". Westerns were HUGE in the 1950s and early 1960s. It wasnt until Sputnik that the mainstream started getting interested in space in a big way.

Well, I meant live-action. :) All those anime shows look interesting, however! I just dont put them in the same category. You can do ANYTHING in anime. But how to do it using live actors? Thats what I meant. :)

Agree 1000%. Unfortunately, the excitement that existed in your (and other members) youth with the lunar landing and the "space race" simply don't exist anymore :(. These days space and space exploration has become much more of an "esoteric" rather than "practical" field of endevour and I do think it has made an impact on the overall "wellness" of the Scifi genre.

Oh believe me, both of those ideas would rock as actual "Live Action" series as neither has anything "obscenely hard" to convert into the format. I would utterly adore to see them both made LA and I seem to remember "Cowboy Bebop" being floated as an idea for a movie a few years ago, but my memory on such things is admittedly a cross between "what I remember" and "what I would like to remember" :P

Seriously though, if any of our members have not seen Trigun or Cowboy Bebob, I STRONGLY recommend watching them in whatever way you are comfortable with, because they are both fantastic series.

How are the stories? Well written? Enjoyable as an adult (big kid) sorta person?

Well BraveStarr is very much a "kids show", coming from back in the days where the adult that may be watching is not a consideration (unlike Cars or Toy Story where there are "in jokes" for the adults)
AS1
Trigun is actually "very moralistic" for Anime. I enjoyed it because of that, but my tastes are obviously different to other members here :P The story itself however is quite solid and follows a mostly logical progression.

As for Cowboy Bebop, solid story, solid characters and logical progression of the episodes. If you can watch this show and not "forget" it is a cartoon/Anime at at least some level, I'd worry about your ability to actually enjoy a story. I mean sure it's not for "everyone", but for a scifi fan, it is excellent.

I thought that Neon Genesis Evangelion was a very adult anime series. It was entertaining to kids, but the stories and the web of events was far too deep for a child to follow. It was LAYERED. Loved it. Will any of those shows intrigue adults on some level? Ill watch them if they have decent stories. :)

Both Trigun and Cowboy Bebob are better than Neon Genisis IMO. Trigun is more simplistic in story than N-G (Trigun is very much a good guy vs bad guy story at its roots, despite everything else), but C-B is very complex and moralisticly "grey". If you liked Evangelion, you should love C-B.!

Right here: http://www.hulu.com/firefly

I strongly urge you NOT to watch the final movie Serenity before seeing ALL the episodes first, in order (they were televised out of order), starting with the pilot. If you do, you will ruin your experience.

The Belle of the Ball
Captain Tightpants!

I am a latecomer to the firefly phenomena. I tried to watch the series on tv but never got into it (once I discovered that eps were shown out of order that was explained! ) then one day i caught the movie serenity on scifi channel and watched it. I feel the movie explains a lot and I went and bought both the series and movie on dvd. it's one of my favorite shows and is always good for a re-watch! :D

Thats because if you watch the movie first, the characters and story make no sense.

i didnt enjoy the movie either :P

Yep, almost everyone who I know who rented the movie did not like it if they hadnt seen the series episodes first. Without knowing these characters, the Serenity movie makes little sense. :).
