It's quite refreshing that Capaldi isn't playing the clown. I can easily see both Tennant and Smith in big shoes and rubber clown noses but when it comes to Capaldi, not so much. This, of course, is a good thing. But they really must come up with some new antagonists for him to chew the scenery with.

I didn't find Tennant to be as big a clown as Smith.

Tennant had his clown moments. As did Smith. But what made Tennant unwatchable later on in his run wasn't clowning but the nonstop EMO. Add in RTDs truly bad decision to make the Doctor a "lonely God" and the result was the worst Who ever (and possibly the worst televised Science Fiction also) - The End of Time.
