This place sounds to me like it is the closest real life thing to Raisa we have on earth. I have never been there, do not have the money to go there, and it is so fantastic it is intimidating. This is what the phenomenal wealth generated from global oil profits can build:

This city is like no other on the entire planet. This picture is the actual skyline of Dubai at night. The tallest building in the world is there.

A lot of their more recent construction has included land reclamation. An earthquake there could cause a lot of liquefaction issues as Japan discovered in their more recent earthquakes like Kobe and Tohoku.

i noticed they don't mention the massive human trafficking of sex slaves and professional working girls there...

all built by the graces of Allah!! peace and blessings be on his name...

--------------

this place will be the most well appointed slum once the oil runs out--these countries do little in the way of economic diversity, nearly everything is based on the production of oil or the spt of the oil industry

Actually only 5% of Dubai income now comes from oil. The rest is real estate, tourism, gold and currency trading and other such items. They started a concerted plan to eliminate their dependence on petrodollars several years ago.

Yes, and they planned Dubai from the outset to be self-sufficient without depending on future oil financing. Most every project in Dubai has been financed by oil money (as opposed to western bank financing).

once the need for oil or the oil is gone, so too will the wealth. No one will want to go there-I've been to the desert, see it once and then go home.

and i don't know, but there seems to be conflicting info on their economy:

""Although UAE has the most diversified economy in the GCC, the UAE's economy remains extremely reliant on oil. With the exception of Dubai, most of the UAE is dependent on oil revenues. Petroleum and natural gas continue to play a central role in the economy, especially in Abu Dhabi. More than 85% of the UAE's economy was based on the oil exports in 2009.[12] While Abu Dhabi and other UAE emirates have remained relatively conservative in their approach to diversification, Dubai, which has far smaller oil reserves, was bolder in its diversification policy.[9] In 2011, oil exports accounted for 77% of the UAE's state budget.[13] Successful efforts at economic diversification have reduced the portion of GDP based on oil/gas output to 25%.[1]

Dubai suffered from a significant economic crisis in 2007–2010 and was bailed out by Abu Dhabi's oil wealth.[217] Dubai is currently running a balanced budget, reflecting economic growth.[218] Tourism acts as a growth sector for the entire UAE economy. Dubai is the top tourism destination in the Middle East.[219] According to the annual MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index, Dubai is the fifth most popular tourism destination in the world.[220] Dubai holds up to 66% share of the UAE's tourism economy, with Abu Dhabi having 16% and Sharjah 10%. Dubai welcomed 10 million tourists in 2013.""

And it is now and always be a MUSLIM nation. thats a non starter for real progress

and why do you think it has such a low crime rate? harsh penalties for minor crimes. many "guest workers" are executed for minor things like burglary/robbery

it is no better then Saudi Arabia as far as human rights go

All that you see in the UAE/Dubai is an illusion based on the temporary economy of oil-yes they may be diversifying, but all is secured by the 'promise to pay' of oil wealth behind everything

This is the conundrum. They have no incentive to diversify their income because they control the global oil prices still (the Arab Muslim nations). Dubai seems to be the Muslim attempt at creating a wealth hub like Paris, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Vienna, New York, etc. Islam eliminates the "fun" from it all. Why live in such a fabulously futuristic city if one cannot have a drink and the women on the beach are all wearing full body suits in the heat of summer? It is like asking the Borg to create a vacation resort.

And it is now and always be a MUSLIM nation. thats a non starter for real progress

That is the dealbreaker for sure. :)

The CIVILIAN crime rates in Muslim nations are actually consistently lower than many western nations. Crimes such as burglary, robbery and rape are fewer. However, many acts considered crimes in the western nations are not crimes in Sharia governed mudslime nations. You can murder an apostate in broad daylight under certain circumstances, then go pick up your dry cleaning and go home and beat your wife for not putting out. I know this might be a bit exaggerating, but not much!

On the economic stuff you have to differentiate between Dubai and the UAE as a whole.

Dubai gets 95% of its revenue from non-oil sources:

http://www.economywatch.com/world_economy/dubai/

The rest of the UAE is a much different matter.

As to human rights Dubai is just like the rest of the UAE - a disaster.

crime rates are low because of the harsh penalties and a court system that can work blindingly fast to find ppl guilty and punish quickly too.

there are few if any loop holes to escape conviction and punishment-unless you are uber rich

-------------------

and in that conundrum-there are beaches (if you can stand the heat that is! most ppl go outside at night over there, amusement parks, parks and beaches are mostly vacant for most of the year during the day due to the heat) where westerners can go in western styled leisure wear/beachwear (Well maybe not french style) and citizens are not allowed. they do not have these in S Arabia but they do have them in Dubai/UAE and Bahrain, one of the reasons those nations were/are used as relaxation areas for western troops there

Dubai also allows public consumption of alcohol, smoking, western movies and basically legal prostitution

check it out (in american lists, they are not so obvious about what it is they are advertising) the UAE turns a blind eye and allows it to not upset the businessmen and tourists

http://dubai.craigslist.org/ths/5166954009.html

check at the obvious human trafficking/sex slavery here--why else would you say "fresh new arrivals of phillipinas"? reminds one of the flyers of long ago that would boast the arrival of
"young strong negroes fresh from africa..."
(and yeah, i am a-ok with prostitution IF that is what the girl wants to do, has to be her choice nothing forced)

Oh, what is a good Muslim oligarch to do?!?! :whip: (we need some muslim emoticons)
