Star Trek New Voyages - The Holiest Thing

The New Voyages fan film team just released a new episode titled "The Holiest Thing". Some thoughts on it:

- It has the Enterprise partly refitted and looking sort of half like it did in Star Trek The Motion Picture. I did not totally understand this as it made it hard for me to place the episode timeline wise.

- Their new Kirk (James Cawley stepped down) is a bit too "kid" like for my tastes, but he tries well.

- The new Spock is MUCH better, and probably the best Spock on the fan films. He has the right cadence and mannerisms which make him sound and feel authentic.

The story is not bad. I think it has some canon issues such as having first contact occur with the Ferengi (which previously had occurred in the TNG episode "The Last Outpost"). Also the chemistry between the Kirk actor and Carol Marcus actress was just not there. But overall it is a worthy piece of work.

LOVED, loved, loved the story. It was a perfect episode story, tying together Carol Marcus with the future Genesis Device, explaining where and how they got the protomatter for the early experiments, and even providing the basis for the birth of David, Captain Kirk's son. Wow....only a fan, a true Trek fan could have written the story. Tied right into Wrath of Kahn's events.

Now the acting....um....It was passable, and very watchable. The casting however, is way way WAY off. The new Captain Kirk is simply too wimpy to be a Captain. He comes off like some plasma maintenance crewman promoted to Decoy for the Captain. :) He was clearly chosen for his hair and eye color similarity to Shatner, but his build and manner, his voice...none of them say Alpha. Cawley did not look at all like Captain Kirk, but he definitely came off as Alpha and a leader. Watchging the decent young Carol Marcus was so forced. There was zero chemistry, and it just didnt seem convincing. Still, the story was so perfect and such a gap closer that I forgave it. :) If only this new kid could pull off the Cawley persona, we would have a great Captain Kirk. I totally agree about Spock. This Spock has been around for a couple of episodes, and although he is very "burly" for a Vulcan, he has polished up his Spock and he is by far the best in these Trek fan productions. Did they really call that mismatched pair of characters playing Sulu and Uhura by their cast names? Ugh, they were totally wrong. Who the hell was the dude with the hair necklace hanging thing doing? Where was Chekhov?

This might be my new favorite Phase II episode. Still not quite up to Star Trek Continues standards in terms of cast, they have definitely caught up in visuals and writing.

GREAT FIND! :smiley_joy::smiley_joy::smiley_joy::smiley_joy::smiley_joy:

You're quite right about the issue with this Kirk - he came off like a decoy or a child captain (kind of like if Wesley had been in command in a TNG episode). He had no chemistry at all with the Carol Marcus actress. I also got a chuckle from whoever that was at helm and yes the new Sulu and Uhura were REALLY off. But it worked in spite of that. At least they have a good Spock now.

The introduction to the Ferengi was not a formal first contact introduction. The Orions would probably have been able to acquire the protomatter, but they were known to the Federation of that time. The Ferengi may have been contacted precisely because they were unknown to the Federation and purely profit driven (the Orion Syndicate has territory too)., Such Trek-thoughtful writing this episode has! The actress who played Dr Carol Marcus was more than decent.

One thing about that Sulu is that his voice is IDENTICAL to George Takei. Closing my eyes, I would not be able to tell them apart. They did not give him much to say though. This episode did not need Sulu or Uhura or Chekhov. But those actors better not be filling those roles on the next episode. :icon_cool:

I am sorry, but this looks like a parody more so than a genuine attempt at continuing star trek. I can't take the actors seriously

First contact with the Ferengi is with Picard at the "Battle of Maxia" when he looses the stargazer and invents the Picard Manuver.
To be fair however, he does not know who they are at that point in time.

Haven't seen their other stuff, eh? Star Trek Phase II was the first serious TOS fan production, and the first to have blessing from CBS. It was the first to hire actual Trek characters in the episodes. They have been around for more than a decade doing this. :)

There has been a shakeup in the casting. Star Trek Phase II (now known as Star Trek New Voyages) has gone through several cast changes over the years. And this production is not nearly as polished as Star Trek Continues which is new on the TOS fan scene. But the writing has improved greatly.

If only Star Trek Continues could get a better Spock - their Spock is a joke.

This is all fan fic?

Yes, and it's top notch. In the world of Fan Films/Series, nobody does it like Star Trek fans. :) If you are a Trek fan, you will LOVE Star Trek Continues. This discussion is about the latest from the oldest of them, Star Trek New Voyages (formerly known as Phase II). These productions have studios, full on sets which used the actual original blueprints, color matched uniforms and paints, etc. The latest stuff has top notch CGI too. You should check them out. :)

I am talking about this particular episode. It's BAD. The acting is cheesy.

I thought that the first informal contact with Ferengi was that Enterprise episode.

That's a great episode
The Ferengi being the moral authority is hilarious.

That is the whole thing with the Ferengi. They are behind lots of shit in many planetary cultures, and they are sneaky and records were never made. I cannot remember the episode where they claimed godhood in a primitive race who thought they were gods. :)

They tried to steal Seven of Nine's nanoprobes too, which means they had a POTENTIAL way to get Voyager back to the Alpha Quadrant and nobody knew back on earth.

Voyager could have been back more times than I remember, but captain napoleon complex wouldn't do it
