The last time I weighed in the 170-180 range was back in 2006 and I had a 34" waste. :(

My average weight throughout the year now is between 210-215 lbs @ 5'10. I've been trying to bring that up another 5-10 lbs for the last year but it's not easy without putting on fat at some point. When I was in Canada, I didn't mind so much during winter but living in Miami means it's almost always beach season and i can't stand the idea of my abs disappearing even for a short period. :icon_lol:

LOL !!!

I forgot to mention, ricotta cheese is a great source of protein. One cup of ricotta cheese made from whole milk contains 28g of protein, 7g carbs and 1g sugar. I can't stand cottage cheese because of its salty flavor and ricotta is an excellent alternative. The best tasting brand for me, by far, has been Polly-O ricotta cheese.

I love ricotta! I sometimes dip celery into it, and it makes an excellent layering in low carb lasagna with other cheeses. I will try that Polly-O brand on your tip. :)

There's a spot around here where I can get ricotta cheese imported from Italy but that can get pretty expensive the way I eat it. :icon_lol:

I'd like to apologise to OM and everyone I've insulted in this forum. My posts were based on unsubstantiated perceptions and incorrect, dated information. I shouldn't have commented on something I really haven't researched, and went off on a tangent. Sorry about that.

Dude! You dont need to apologize for anything. All I might have suggested would be to be inspired to check out the links and videos. I am always open to change, for instance in the beginning I was very resistant to adjustments in this diet because I was so new at it and I was seeing great results by following it EXACTLY. But then Phase 3 puts you in the driver's seat, and you basically tailor the plan to your own metabolism and goals. In my case, I decided to keep my carbohydrate intake to between 80 and 100 per day, with some days lower and others higher. Exercise plays a big role in that for me, but not to the point where Im in the gym 4 days a week (yet :)). On a low carb diet, it means you can eat TWO 16oz steaks smothered in onions, a huge salad with oil and vinegar dressing or several low-sugar substitutes for thousand or ranch or whatever, plus all the ice tea sweetened with stevia you want. For fizzy then just add club soda. Or there are at least 50 sugar-free varieties of diet soda that are not sweetened with NutraSweet (aspartame), which is bad for you.

Back in the day, I ate according to the FDA food pyramid, and I was fine until I hit 40. Suddenly, the pounds started piling on and I felt tired all the time. I think it has to do with metabolism slowdowns as well as the tolerance limit for your body to be inflamed 24/7 from sugars and processed foods. Your body will heal and become healthy again if you just start giving it what it wants...REAL FOOD! :)

No apologies needed. These forums allow all points of view.

SNACKING Low Carb...easy.

Depending on your level in a low carb diet, you can have great snacks unless you are in your induction (first two weeks). After that, you can have NUTS! This includes all varieties of nuts, sunflower seeds, and amongst the best to eat are almonds and macadamia nuts (because of the fat content). You can have CHEESE! Up to 4 ounces per day in Induction, and more after that. Cheese cubes are extremely satisfying, and you can have them with sliced meats like pepperoni and ham and roast beef. You can have fruits like pears, apples, apricots, plums, peaches, all low GI fruits. In the later stages of your diet when you are at your goal weight or 10 pounds away, you can have the higher GI fruits like grapes and bananas.

Other treats you can have are low carb ice cream (with sugar-free chocolate syrup) or carob syrup (avoid malitol). Im writing this because here on the 4th, I have lots of Atkins friendly meat (all meat) with barbeque sauce, and low carb snacks!

Anyway...to all Americans, Happy 4th of July!

The biggest problem I have in losing weight is the difficulty of having to feed my family while trying to stay away from the meals I fix. It was so much simpler to just be responsible for me. My daughter is a slug by nature and has this extremely fast metabolism, and my 13 yr old son is almost 6'1", plays a lot of sports and needs his protein, carbs, and dairy. Ugh!!!

I LOVE raw almonds and eat them all the time. They make a filling snack and are very healthy. I'm looking at making some almond butter because I can use almonds and a healthy oil of my choosing along with a light sweetener. The commercial stuff is always loaded with sugar/corn syrup or God knows what so I assume my version would be healthier. I'm not eating much bread these days so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I will do with the almond butter once I make it as sandwiches are out. So for now I'll just munch the whole almonds and I'm good with that. :)

Oh yeah, and forget about commercial peanut butter which is the same as eating a candy bar. Nothing but a hydrogenated mess. Yuck!

I agree that much of it has to with what we eat, but not all of it. There are diseases that make you gain weight unless you are on a very strict regimented diet and sometimes that doesn't help. I use to weigh 454 pounds. I have been stricty watching what I eat and when. I have lost 78.2 pounds. I have Poly-cystic ovarian disease which cause excessive weight gain. So It isn't as simple as just change the way you eat and exercise. I just want people to understand that in some cases it is medical not just laziness.

A close friend of mine had thyroid cancer and that caused her to gain excessive weight, too, in spite of eating very little. She beat it, though, lost all the weight and she's living a very healthy lifestyle right now. She's become a gym rat, too. Beating the cancer involved having her thyroid removed and now she's on Synthroid the rest of her life but it doesn't cause any issues.

That's fantastic...Good for her.
Mom, has opportunity for P.T. to gain strength and possible a trainer because of her heart conditions. So we figure as I take care of her we will both do what they say and see how it works.

The Cold Hard Truth about fast food: NONE OF IT IS PARTICULARLY HEALTHY

The only thing anybody needs to know about fast food establishments is why they exist: CONVENIENCE. The convenience to the customers is obvious. You order what you want, and literally in minutes, you have your food. What you have to keep in mind is the convenience of your vendor as well. It is very convenient for them to use frozen or pre-prepared foods whenever possible. Every item on the menu of any fast food establishment is going to be processed into a quickly prepared version of itself. All fries will be pre-cut and frozen, all hamburger patties will be frozen. Breads will be delivered refrigerated, and your large soda will exist as a gooey syrup in large canisters under the soda machine until you push that dispenser button and mix it with water. :grey: :smiley-015:

I know too much about that, and many here still regularly eat this stuff so I wont go more into that. But what I will talk about is MARKETING. The most unhealthy food establishments will want you to believe that they are the "better" fast food choice. This pathetic plug of a video was for Taco Bell's ridiculous "Taco Bell Drive Thru Diet". Seriously folks! :smile-new:

Remember, they (these establishments) exist to sell fast food to people who are buying convenience. It is not in their best interest to be more concerned with healthy choices and rampant obesity. It is in their best interest to find creative ways to combine a short list of "standard" ingredients to create new offerings, and to market it as a "healthier" choice, or give it some sort of cachet (just add the word "Malibu" or "Premium" to the name). This is how those frozen hamburger patties get chopped up and tossed with soy sauce, then tossed into lettuce and tomato (the same used in the burgers) and called the "Malibu Beef Salad" [note: this is a fictitious product]. Toss some sour cream and chopped leeks for full effect..

America is starving, even though it is gorging itself. Reminds me of the premise of the Star Trek TOS episode "The Trouble With Tribbles". :hypnotysed:

Folks in Cali, do they have these Slater's 50/50 restaurants near you? I'd imagine that it is hard to beat a 100% ground bacon burger! :beckett_new049:

California burger chain Slater's 50/50 may be bringing home the bacon, now that its menu features a burger made of 100 percent ground bacon. Not to gild the lily, but the Fourth of July-inspired The 'Merica burger comes topped with a slice of thick-cut bacon, bacon island dressing, and bacon flavored cheddar cheese. It's only nonbacon topping is an impressive sunny-side-up egg.

I'm all for the all-protein diet but even I have my limits. I'm gonna puke if I keep looking at that. :smiley-015:

Apparently you only have 3 weeks left to get one. :(

http://blogs.ocweekly.com/stickaforkinit/2012/07/slaters_5050_100_percent_bacon_burger_merica.php

The 'Merica Burger is loaded with a sunny-side-up egg, thick-cut bacon, bacon island dressing and bacon cheddar cheese. It's available through July 31 at all three Slater's 50/50 locations--Huntington Beach, Anaheim Hill and San Diego.

The '"Merica burger"? Americans got this shit all upside down, bro. They shouldn't flaunt these shortcuts to obesity and arterial obstruction with pride. It's f**king embarrassing. :D

As a true ‘Merican you are expected to suck it up and run a triathlon or two to compensate for the extra calories in this meal. Since you're a Canuck, I would not expect you to know this.. :rolleye0014:
