The Orville has (not unexpectedly) been renewed for a Season 3! :) This was not unexpected since there is a toy line, comic books and other licensed merchandise being made available for Christmas. Here is an article on Variety:

https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/the-orville-renewed-season-3-fox-1203188078/

EXCERPT:

Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi series “The Orville” has been renewed for a third season at Fox.

Set 400 years in the future, the series follows The U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship stocked with a crew of both humans and aliens who have to balance complications in space, as well as everyday personal and relationship problems.

In the second season, the intrepid explorers met new species and civilizations, and learned secrets about old friends. It averaged 3.16 million total live viewers and a 0.75 in the 18-49 demographic.

The series stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman and Jessica Szohr. It was created and written by MacFarlane, who also executive produces alongside Brannon Braga, David A. Goodman, Jason Clark and Jon Cassar.

This is great news! If this show keeps going like it is going, we will soon see the first Orville conventions happen like it did for Star Trek so many decades ago. This show WILL inspire fans to dress in cosplay for characters in the show, buy the merchandise and create fan fiction. Let's see if Disney is as heavy handed as Paramount/CBS has been with fan fiction for the show.

Looking forward to Season 3 and beyond!

YAY!

This likely means we will also shortly hear that Seth MacFarlane has signed a new deal with Fox.

Yep. I think Season 3 will cement this series into the place Star Trek had. Star Trek is dead.

Oh yes! It already has deals for a video game, a comic from Dark Horse, collectible cards and a boardgame. There are also action figures in the pipeline. You don't see these types of merchandising deals for a cancelled show. And this stuff if it sells adds big time to the bottom line of a show or movie.

I see a franchise building here. Seth is no stranger to that, having built Family Guy into a juggernaut. The difference here is that Family Guy had no actual rival in the way that The Orville is directly challenging Star Trek, and that it's success means Star Trek's failure. The Orville is actively taking away fans from Star Trek, whereas Family Guy and other shows Seth has made did not do that to other shows.

I don't see how fans of the Orville would suddenly cease being Star Trek fans. There is room for both.

I agree there is room for both. But most Star Trek fans who hate Discovery have an emotional reason for rejecting it as well as the fact that Discovery is just not on the same level or in the same space as Star Trek pre-2009. I just don't like Discovery, and I am not going to subscribe to CBS All Access or even pirate it. Even if there were no Orville, I still would not be watching Discovery. The Orville's fans are mostly Star Trek fans and that is exactly who Seth Mcfarlane was targeting with the show. Had there been no Alex Kurtzman and Bad Robot connection to CBS, then The Orville would have been the next Star Trek show, as Seth pitched it to CBS first. Star Trek is no longer Star Trek, but the Orville is Star Trek even though it isn't. I know, sounds weird, but it's true!

SG-1 actors wants to be on the Orville.

This was big on Twitter a couple of weeks ago. Corin was approached to be on Discovery too, and Twitter wasn't having it. :)

Yes but I still think he can't do both. There is no way he can humanely do both.

You don't know much about Seth then. :) He can do both, plus a lot more. He was doing other stuff besides Family Guy, and this show is his baby.

so after this next season, to be on hulu?-- will orville then be on the Peacock streamer?

note--- amazon needs to increase their 'aggregate service' of other streamers (they carry cbs all crapcess, hbo, starz and about 15 others already) so we can just pay one payment to one service for multiple memberships

Good. Neither of those things are what I watch TV shows for.

personally, this diktat and others hollywood, celebrities and social influencers have been saying and doing on MANY things lately I see as being nothing more than virtue signalling

i mean, if the porn industry is still making porn and stupid crap like WWE and MMA is still going on, then what makes them so special to not do those kinds of scenes?

I have to sign up for Hulu to watch this show going forward? Goodbye Netflix...
