These people making the new Star Trek view television as an inferior medium even though one can tell a lot long story in one season of a television series than in one movie. Even a miniseries has much more story room.
I agree with this. But what has happened now in the Industry is the packaging of the valuable properties into big-budget theatrical productions so that they can bring in the big bucks. In order to turn a profit on a TV series, it has to pay for it's production in some way. The traditional way is advertising, but now there are additional revenue makers made possible by game tie-ins and product sales.
Storytelling is just formulaic these days with a few exceptions. Both the NuTrek films are pure formulaic garbage. If the current cast, ship and events were suddenly made into a weekly TV series...how would you tell it long term? Starting out with transwarp beaming, the meaning of space travel changes pretty much right off the bat. Dumb looking Klingons with steampunk warbirds (do they even cloak?), no Vulcan homeworld, red matter, and of course there are tribbles all over the Federation, on earth and just about everywhere...and they can make more magic blood. Doesnt anybody remember what happens when you feed tribbles?
