Nicholas Meyer Working on another Star Trek project

TrekMovie: Obviously there is much much more Star Trek piled up on the shelf now that is harder to ignore. With Wrath of Khan there really wasn’t a lot. Now there may even be too much to deal with.

Meyer: I think that is fair. What I can say is that when Bryan Fuller invented Star Trek: Discovery and conceived it, he found a niche in the chronology that allows for another stream.

TrekMovie: But it still fits as part of that chronology, but you feel there is freedom in that niche?

Meyer: Yeah.

http://trekmovie.com/2017/06/02/exc...che-and-hints-at-another-star-trek-project-2/

Meyer: One thing that has nothing to do with Discovery is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either.

After pressing him, Meyer assured he could “absolutely!” reveal on the record he was working on this non-Discovery Star Trek project, and that it was something he was working on currently.

The only other known major Star Trek project that comes to mind would be a feature film. But Meyer wasn’t budging when asked to confirm this assumption…

TrekMovie: Are we talking more feature film because as far as I know, there is only one television project, I assume.

Meyer: You can assume.
Probably Star Trek 4.

Yeah. Or maybe a reboot of the original series.
It is unlikely that CBS would put out two star trek series. That will pose a lot of money being wasted on an untested and highly risky series. Not only that, but Nicholas Meyer has not been involved in any of the star trek series apart from discovery. In addition, working on two tv series would wear himself out. My guess is either a comicbook/animated series at best or the 4th installment of the movie which has already been announced but the media is just trying to generate clicks so that it generates hype and gives them ad revenue and pretend that it won't be happening.

While Star Trek: Discovery‘s launch date is right around the corner, it seemingly isn’t the only Star Trek series being developed right now. Nicholas Meyer, the director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, is reportedly developing a series spotlighting Khan, arguably the greatest villain in the franchise’s history.

Meyer joined the world of Star Trek in 1982, after the critical and financial underperformance of the franchise’s first cinematic outing, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Meyer decided to craft a leaner, meaner sequel that would utilize one of the most memorable villains from the television series – the late 20th century revolutionary Khan Noonien Singh, who appeared in the series standout episode “Space Seed”. After attempting to overrun the Enterprise, Khan and his followers were left exiled on the planet Ceti Alpha V to start a new society. Shortly after their arrival, a neighboring planet exploded, making Ceti Alpha V a barren desert planet. Set 15 years after their arrival, The Wrath of Khan saw Khan seeking vengeance against Kirk and the Enterprise crew.

Does no one get Star Trek? It is not about the characters! It's NOT about the characters! Did I mention that thing about it not being about the characters? It's the framework FIRST. Earth is the "capital" of the Federation. Starfleet is the military arm of the Federation, the planets are the states, and the people on those planets travel back and forth to different planets forming an interplanetary society. THEN comes the characters.

You can have real Star Trek on the ground, underwater in a city, on a space station, on a generational ship, underground, in a virtual reality, and it will feel like Star Trek as long as the Trek universe is there and properly represented. Kirk, Spock, Scotty and McCoy are not Star Trek as much as the Enterprise is. But JJ never got that. Star Wars is only about the characters. The Kelvin movies center around the characters, which is why the death of the Kelvin universe Chekov is a head shot it might not survive. Discovery changes the universe into something not Star Trek, and it appears early on that it is also all about the characters. I do not want to see a Captain Worf or a Kahn series or any series centering around any specific character we have already seen.

The trick with Trek is to first establish the universe and the premise of the show, which has little or nothing to do with characters. Then you populate it with your characters, having a central ensemble, and then develop them and have them interact with more characters introduced later. Have those background extras who walk around in the trek universe come to life when you need them, then fade them away when you don't.

Can I have the job? :(

What ship is this?

This is interesting if true:

Basically the notion is that CBS is hedging its bets because of the bad reception Discovery is getting.

Also, the part about licensing does explain a lot of what we are seeing that bothers us, and also highlights the stupidity of CBS. Simply put, they should have engaged a different production company and granted them the correct license in order to make the show correctly.

What kind of a self sabotage is this? The licencing issue is a big pile of shit. The second project I agree could be a backup plan to save the series or use it to continue star trek, but if they call it discovery, if discovery fails, the chances of people watching a second season will dwindle. No one will watch it because it will put people off and they'll cancel the series.

That video says a lot. I think we can basically write off Discovery before it even starts. This is probably worse than what was done with SGU by at least one order of magnitude. I will still watch it because it could be entertaining in its own right. It could help to think of it not as a Star Trek show but as just a random new scifi show. Maybe we can still get some sort of enjoyment from it. Alternatively it could be watched as something to bitch an moan about. I'm sure that's the road it will generally go. Here's hoping for some sort of positivity shining through the tsunami of badgering which is set to commence. May real Trek-fans shine a light of hope in the midst of the sea of burning torches.

That has to be the best video I have seen around which has it's finger on the pulse of what is really going on in the fanbase prior to the airing of Discovery. So many of the mainstream outlets were trying to spin the angry fanbase into "just a group of trolls". I would come across totally fabricated shill threads in the comment sections of some of them, talking about how they love the new uniforms and especially the design of the Discovery. How the Klingons were so new and different. Lulz.

I was excited about it until that first trailer came out showing the bad CGI view of Discovery. If I had not first heard it was released from an official outlet, I would have thought it was a fan-made joke. That ship alone made me realize that we were not going to get a familiar Star Trek. All the design changes, the overall look of the thing was so far away from what was expected that it just announced that the rest would feel equally as foreign. Also, some images in this video I had never seen before. Like this one:

Discovery_Transporter_room.PNG

THAT looks like a transporter room. Why did they not show that image instead of the awful "transporter room" they showed with this?:

It's probably on another ship. But whatever, the first airing episode of this show is just going to be very interesting in the sense that in about half a day, you will be able to tell whether or not the thing will go past whatever finished episodes they have already created. This thing is basically D.O.A. but Netflix has already spent the money and the production has already made a few episodes. After that, unless it's not as bad as it appears to be, it's dead.

Did anyone else catch the way they alluded to this show being heavy on inter-personal melodrama? They mentioned Roddenberry's rule that the characters all get along (in a larger abstract sense) and how this show was basically going to jettison that directive. That fairly screams that this show is going to have lots of angst and naval gazing and stupid antagonism between characters. That's not a good thing.

I got that one when they came out with that disclaimer-like statement about the Captain not being the focus of the show, and that this was more about life on the starship than anything else. They have since changed lots of what they said because of revisions and fan revulsion.

Yeah but like SGU I doubt they can go back and change what they already filmed. It would be too cost prohibitive. Plus you know that there is a subconscious resistance to "fixing" what they perceive to be a great production. That, too, happened with SGU. TPTB were so arrogant and convinced of the greatness of their story that they could barely be moved to fix things in season 2 (which is to say they didn't fix things at all). After it was cancelled they continued to grumble about wanting to complete the story despite the fact that the viewing public clearly did not want more of their shitty storytelling. Arrogance, pure and simple.

So I suspect with Discovery TPTB were blindsided by the fan reaction and are confusedly trying to put a bandaid on a gushing artery. I say "confusedly" because we all know that these producers (writers, directors, etc.) are convinced their original idea for the show is the best one and they don't really understand what the problem is. No doubt they think that once the public actually watches the show it will see the greatness of it and will become rabid fans. Too bad that's not how the world works.

At any rate, it's this arrogant mentality that is going to sink this show. And if I'm proven wrong and this show turns out to be the cat's ass then that is great. I can always use another show to watch. But from what I've seen of this show so far I'm not going to hold my breath. (And I'm certainly not going to pay to watch CBS for this, or anything else!)

Especially the bolded. There is no financial risk because Netflix paid so much for the licensing that it paid for everything so far, I have read that the pitch to Netflix made them think they were going to get a grand revival of Star Trek, but were gravely disappointed after seeing the stuff released so far, as well as the abrupt departure of Bryan Fuller.

THAT. They are so convinced that the obtuse changes they have made are going to "fix" Star Trek and make it cooler. And hey, Kuntalingons are far more threatening looking with the new changes because they look like...well, you know. :rolleye0014:. And what's the big deal that the USS Enterprise 1701 is co-existent with the Discovery, and we are saying we are in the Prime timeline? The fans won't notice that this thing is so far from the Star Trek prime timeline that it is not even in the same dimension of existence.

I do like the Shenzhou ship, but it belongs in the Nemesis or late Voyager era. How is it they would have this ship and the USS Enterprise 1701 in the same space? They can't which means this show is a reboot and nobody wants one or asked for one. It's D.O.A

I dunno....too many flubs, too many mistakes and missteps. Star Trek is basically dead because nobody at CBS or Paramount seems to be able to understand what Star Trek is. I am no longer a fan of anything past 2009 calling itself Star Trek (except Star Trek Continues which is now dead).
