The Asimov thread

Oh we can't even begin to discuss scifi books without discussing the granddaddy of scifi books...Isaac Asimov! I admit to loving his books, yes they are not "action" packed...no shoot'em ups, but are full on intrigue and interest for me. I have a HUGE collection from his early 50's books to the foundation series and even collections of his short stories. Asimov could always be counted on to write a book/story that left me thinking. :D

Haha in a way I did that to show that talking about Asimov is just a tad to broad a topic for one thread. It's like "which one of the 200 or so books this cat has written do you want to talk about".

more to appreciate the man's entire body of work. So much of what is commonly accepted in science fiction was his invention/interpretation. Actually i am convinced George Lucas stole from Asimov for the star wars series. :P han solo is a rip off of an asimov character! :P then there is lucky starr=luke skywalker....too coincidental for me! ;)

Yes he was and is influential, but all writing sits on what came before to one degree or another. Read some Olaf Stapledon and see what I mean. Try Last and First Men, Odd John, or Star Maker. All written in the 1030's.

BTW as a note to people that want to read vintage or classic sci-fi, put yourself in the time period it is written in or don't even bother. A great example is, I had to read Brave New World for a university class. All my classmates hated it. I asked why, and they all said all the sci-fi in it had already happened. So I said "look at the copyright date, it is from 1932, and see it from those eyes". I mean in '32 we had bi-planes and if you wanted to go cross country you got on a train and it took days. You have to keep in mind we first put a man outside our own atmosphere in 1961, it hasn't even been 50 years yet.

EXACTLY context of the times is everything. Around the world in 80 days- now it would be what 18 hours? ;) I loved Brave New World btw...great story. I heard kids complain about 1984... missing the point that it had a cold war background (thinking about what is happening today...not so farfetched is it! ;) )

I read 1984, but I won't read it again. The cautionary tales type novels just depress me. :) Ones like Brave new world, 1984, Fahrenheit 451. (shiver) And don't get me started on the Handmaidens Tale

I find those very intriguing myself...the old "be careful what you do..."
