I for one really enjoyed the show . It had a storyline that got me hooked after a few episodes . I believe it was the same writer from Greys Anatomy and because of that sadly got the title of ( Grey's Anatomy in Space ) but it was completely Si- Fi to me . Wonderfull melodic music and visual eye candy from the set's to the cgi and of course the lovely female astronauts . I was also intrigued as to how the story was being told by one of the astronauts .
I was watching it in reruns not knowing it had been canceled and was looking forward to season 2 but completely shocked that they ended the series after only 13 episodes and left everyone hanging as to what happened .
I highly recommend that you watch this series if only to take your mind away from that crap show ( sg-poo)

Defying Gravity was another soap-fi show, and thats why the ratings went to shit. Its was like Grey's Anatomy mixed with Lost, and was one of three shows created after the soap-fi model. Caprica and SGU were the others, and Flash Forward, to some degree. But just for others to see, I would also recommend watching an episode. It has the same suckiness as SGU has. :)

I only watched three episodes of Defying Gravity and I was done really after the second one. It makes SGU look exciting. It was REALLY bad to me. This is what Associated Content had to say about it:

2052, the year in which Defying Gravity starts, looks about the same as 2009. People wear the same clothes, drive the same cars, and drink the same beer to excess. The space ship, Antares, looks pretty cool, though.

One cannot examine Defying Gravity without looking at its tendency to defy science, technology, and common sense for the purposes of a plot. One does not have to know much about orbital mechanics to wonder how fast a space ship has to be, for example, to explore every planet from Mercury out to Neptune and then return to Earth in just six years.

The almost total lack of microgravity is explained away by some techno-babble about nanotechnology in uniforms or something. This is why one has to be totally naked to have micro gravity sex. Mission Control is able to communicate with the Antares over great distances where in the real universe there would be a time delay. A tether has to be reeled in hand over hand by one of main characters in order to save another main character instead of with a motorized winch. Someone is chosen as an astronaut candidate who does not know how to swim when knowing how to swim is a crucial skill.

The human relationships angle turned out to be more than a little tedious, more like a toned down soap opera than anything else.

True that it was kinda sappy but for me it was more intelligently written then sgu poo . Sure it had lot,s of flaws regarding the science but sg poo is so off the mark with there science that the show makes me puke . Where as DG was kinda like listening to Moby if you like his music and myself being one stressed out son of a bitch I found that the show made me calm and not all stressed ou like frigging sg poo made me . Sorry no one seemed to like it but my real point i was trying to make was I wish they did not leave us hanging and at least give it a finish . I am sure tptb will give stinking sgu a finish as they have invested so much money into there crap show . Thanks

I really enjoyed Defying Gravity. I liked the way the writers used sophisticated storytelling techniques (i.e., symbolism and metaphor) to tell their stories and how small comments/scenes in an early episode (flashback or not) was revealed later to be extremely important to the overall universe.

The characters were solidly built and so was the universe. Rather than just dealing with issues on the Antares the audience was gradually being made aware of the world environmental crisis that had no solution. A crisis that the secret mission of Antares might be able to alleviate. (Very telling that multiple countries were willing to invest outrageous amounts of money in 'frivolous' scientific exploration when the planet was in such dire need.)

One of the most appealing facets of all sci fi (for me anyway) is the mirror it holds up to current realities - and DF did that in a provocative and intelligent way.

I am sorry it was canceled - the show was developing (after an admittedly slow start) into a seriously stimulating and engaging story.

I don't remember much about this short-lived show, but I rather liked it at the time.
