Moving...

I hate moving, but find myself having to move again, as the idiots who own the building I live in have decided to not only remodel, but to jack rents about 40 percent, and I can't afford that.

After looking what seemed like everywhere, I finally found a house about 30 miles away from the place I'm leaving. Yes, it's a long way away, but when you have pets, it can be difficult to find a landlord willing to let you move into a place with them.

The past few weeks have been downright insane with trying to find a place. Today the packers came to get everything boxed up. Monday they haul everything away, and Tuesday, we move into the new place (as we moved in before 4/1/15, we'll get May for free).

Wednesday is one of the final Thrilling Adventure Hour shows, and we've got tickets, and WonderCon is Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I'm not even going to have to to relax and get my bearings until Monday, April 6th.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

Post scriptum:
I've got knee issues, so a walk-up apartment isn't anything I can use, and ground floor units are almost impossible to find in my budget.

I hope your new place becomes "home" very soon. :) I can relate about the pets! Hopefully your move is incident free and that your critters adjust quickly.

Bought a fridge today, as rental homes rarely come with one out this way. Fry's had one on sale for a very good price and they paid the sales tax, ultimately saving me over $400. It gets delivered Tuesday afternoon.

It's in Pomona, which is near Riverside, but that doesn't bother me at all. I'm looking forward to the peace this will give me for writing. Downtown Los Angeles has gotten entirely too noisy to be able to focus on my work.

It's stressful right now, but will ultimately turn out to be a blessing. I'm certain of that.

Yes, in time it will be a blessing. The worst part is getting over the initial move but after a couple weeks it should start to feel like home. Hopefully the cats will adjust quickly and once that's done it should be smooth sailing. :encouragement:

TPTB have turned Downtown LA back into a social and shopping mecca, and the influx of hipsters and tourists coming into town for sports are driving the prices and rents up there. Why not Pomona? :) Your dog will be fine as long as you are there with her, and the cats will adjust within a couple of weeks. It might take you a bit longer as a human!

Does your city have a rent control ordinance? Even when such ordinances exist, landlords will still attempt such maneuvers hoping tenants are neither informed nor motivated to find out if such protections are available. From what I know, certain cities in California have them and a 40% hike, regardless of what they're doing and how much they're spending on the building, is abusive by any standard.

Most of the cities that have them are not cheap:

  • City of Los Angeles: (866) 557-7368
  • Santa Monica: (310) 458-8751
  • West Hollywood: (323) 848-6450
  • Beverly Hills: (310) 285-1031

One of the things I like about semi-rural Illinois where I am. Chicago is close enough when I need anything from there (only about 20 minutes) and prices are very stable and such. Also reasonably quiet.

Downtown Los Angeles isn't covered by rent control, and those buildings that are were built (and put into use for residential use) before 1978. That's the way the law was written. This place wasn't built until 1988.

As long as the landlord gives you at least 60 days notice of a rent increase in excess of 10%, they're within the boundaries of the law. If it's 10% or less, they only need to give 30 days notice.

Woke up to birdsong today. No traffic sounds, no sirens or yelling lunatics woke me in the night.

So wonderfully peaceful here.

Guy's coming tomorrow morning to fish wires for our internet, and a guy is coming Sunday to run a water line to our fridge, which is deep enough to house not only Uncle Nicknack, but his summer and winter wardrobes as well.

The critters are settling in nicely, too.

And now, off to unpack a couple more boxes.

My office workspace.

The external monitors are all connected with the Toshiba Dynadock that my kid gave me this last Christmas. Sadly, my desk isn't long enough for the Surface Pro 3 to fit, but I've got it set up as monitor number 3, so I don't use it often. LOL

All in all, it doesn't suck.

Pics like that make it a little hard to enjoy my computer set-up: a cheap notebook balanced on a pillow on my lap. :icon_lol:

We put in a garden last weekend, and this weekend, my kid's been digging a trench for a water line to go directly over there so she can set up a drip system.

In between all the trenching yesterday, she surprised me with a misting system for the back patio. It'll be a wonderful way to cool off as things warm up over the summer.

The water line has been installed and covered over. Next step: buy some grass seed to get rid of the scar across the back lawn as soon as possible.

Anyone who says women can't do this kind of thing successfully the first time needs a metal-studded clue by four upside the head.

Several times.

Lawn guy was here today and started talking about that it was a good job and "the guy" who put in the new irrigation line.

"It wasn't 'a guy', it was my daughter".

"Your DAUGHTER?"

"Yep."

And I smiled as I walked away.

It felt goooood.
