VR-the next addiction? The sci fi writers have warned us...

Is this the new addiction, possibly a crippling one?

When I see ppl using these things and the attachment they form it makes me think of that not so good Bruce Willis movie (SURROGATES) where the population stays indoors while living life vicariously through remote viewed "android" bodies

but society in general, sees anything tech related as not addicting but good because it is tech

ex--here, excessive online gaming is not seen as an addiction, in Asia, it is not only recognized as an abnormal behaviour but rigorous rehab centers are set up for its treatment

i think this VR has a more wide spread appeal then other tech "addictions" and it has the potential to become as addicting as meth for many ppl

psychologists recognize it as an addiction in the USA. but like most addictions here - there are few resources available.

it is just a "note" in the dsm 5, it is not a official dx and cannot be used for insurance billing

they may treat it and disguise the treatment under some other dsm dx though so they can get their money

VR is overrated. I have now tried the best of them (the ones available for testing), and although they are fascinating and the experience is unique, it is just not at the point where you feel like you are NOT in a simulation being played out in your headset. It is certainly less addicting than Tetris or Microsoft Solitaire. Just my opinion!

I think that a large target user group is the same as it was for the VCR---porn

It exists...;)

vrporn.com

i know. for awhile 2 yrs (?) ago, whether you wanted it or not, if you were signed in on YT and your acct was set as adult filter based on your age, it was showing up in the suggested video's

it was mostly soft stuff, like girls running around and jumping barely dressed, but those videos had links to other more graphic vids

it might still be on YT, idk, i do know it is no longer randomly in suggested videos

That was a prophetic post you made in 2016 :) I am currently addicted to VR now.

That was a clueless response from me in February when I only had the phone VR headset which I thought was the "real thing" when I got it. Boy was I wrong!

^^^NOT true VR. The real deal is devices like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Steam Valve Index (all tethered PC headsets powered by at least an Nvidia GTX 1060) and now the completely independent Oculus Quest. If a phone is involved, or there is only one controller, then you aren't getting real VR like the kind you can get addicted to. The real thing will have you in VR for hours on end, enough time to grow a five o'clock shadow by the time you stop playing.

well the first step on the road to recovery is to identify and accept that there is a problem :)

hey maybe that would be a good business angle-- online ,VR therapy sessions, where you and a therapist are in the same VR room (is that even possible)?

and then what happens when a algorithm is directed to and 'taps in' to a VR gaming or other experience 'room' and id's itself as a human player?

i see more and more sci fi scenarios slowly inching their way to reality, and so far, most of them only serve to degrade human experiences while delivering the previously unexperiencable; and exploiting humans for profit and robbing them o f their time to do 'free time' while monetizing escapism to the max. all the while eroding physical health by keeping you parked in a chair on your 'vr walk in Yosemite'

no thanks

Well, there is an upside to VR. Many of the most popular games like Beat Saber, Superhot VR and lots of the fighting games require you to be standing, ducking, swinging or dancing. You can get quite the workout. Beat Saber makes me work up a sweat, as does Drunkn Bar Fight (my latest favorite). Vader Immortal is pretty physical too. No PC based game requires you to move around like that.
