VIKINGS S5.2

What an unwelcome ass pounding TPTB's are putting to the actual history!

now, we all know and expect tv/movies to distort/edit and "mash up" historical events and persons, and VIKINGS has been doing this for a few season now

but, before, the balance was in favor of history. even when they speculated- like with Ragnar's "chinese" slave girl, it was something that was entirely possible. the slave trade between central asia, the mid east and Scandinavia-via Keivan Rus- was quite active. doubt though, that any actual chinese person would have ever made it into the trade though.

so, things were made up, as they are in historical fiction, but were still in the realm of the probable

now though, they are going flagrantly in the face of the written record

funny thing is, in seasons 1 and 2, set in a time period where there is little to no historical record for, TPTBs were more honest to what they were putting on the screen

there is plenty of written record to cover the time they are depicting now. many people have a written record of this time and the events of the saxons and the northmen. the welsh, the irish, the scots, franks and saxons all have accounts written.

a few things of absurdity taking place this half season:

Ivar the boneless as "caligula"

Ivar is a historical figure. He is recorded as a son of Ragnar (We know Ragnar existed through the accounts of his sons). He was never a King of Kattegat. He never proclaimed himself a god. He spent most of his time trying to rule in places like York and Ireland. He is most likely the founder of the Irish Dynasty known as the Ui Imair.

Ubbe never served King Alfred. he died campaigning against him.

Battle scenes. Neither the saxons nor the danes fought on horseback (one of the reasons the saxons lost at Hastings to Norman cavalry). they did not fight in mass one on one melee battles, they fought in pitched shield wall battles. and nearly everyone would have a helmet and most would be using a spear or axe, not swords. swords were damned expensive.

but shield wall battles would be very boring to watch on tv--i get it

i know, i am pissing into the wind here, but, come on!

bottom line:

this show has become a total shit fest for fans of history and historical fiction. if you are just into watching crap for the hell of it, then party on :)
