On September 24, 2017, Star Trek Discovery will air it's first episode. We plan to watch it and then come here and review it over tea (or beer or pot) that night. Let's go over how it should be done:
    • First, get your free first week of CBS All Access HERE
    • See what time is best for you to watch, then come here and review it.
Easy! Please, there should be no spoilers until the rest of us who watch have weighed in. Some notes:

Your first free week does NOT obligate you to more weeks or months. If you do decide to keep it, it will be $5.99/mo for limited commercials (lol) and $9.99 for commercial free. There is NO WAY that I will be paying for this service after that first week, but I just want to let you know how they have set it up. It's explained at the link. During that week, you will be able to download the app for the phone and watch on there or a tablet, plus your TV. You DO have to put in your credit card to start the free trial, but you can easily cancel. I would like for anyone to take a look at the conditions here and tell me if this is actually saying that even if you cancel, you will still be billed for a month?

*All subscriptions will automatically renew for monthly and/or annual periods as applicable, and your credit card will be charged in advance of each billing period unless cancelled. New subscribers are eligible for a trial period prior to their first renewal. If cancelled, termination of access will be effective the billing cycle following termination. Prices are in U.S. dollars, and are subject to change. Other restrictions and taxes apply. You may cancel the promotional period or subscription at any time from your account management page or by calling 888-274-5343 Monday to Sunday 8 am to midnight EST.

    (from the Subscription page)

I plan to set my free week up on Sept 22 so that will cover the episode plus give me a couple of days to cancel.

    Anybody interested in participating?

I've got Netflix so I'll be able to see it on 25th. Besides, an hour after it airs anywhere you'll be able to get it online for free.

Well, I am not going to be a dictator here. :) You want to allow them (in tags)? I have no problem with that. It isn't like it's Star Trek or anything. For me, it's already spoiled. :sulkiness: :shame: :icon_lol:

Well, I am out. I am not going to watch it. I have no interest in it. Tell me how it is. I was hoping for a decent star trek series but I see this series will be successful but successful for the wrong reasons, and targeting the wrong crowd. I'll be putting my attention to the orville.

THIS. It will draw a new fanbase, which is nothing like the original fanbase, but will become loyal to this show. It isn't Kirk and Spock, or any of their parent's Star Trek. It will be Sparkly Trek.

You're right in that it won't get many hardcore ST fans. But I don't think it will be enough of a draw to bring in new fans who are willing to pay to watch yet another soap opera. Let's say I'm a millenial who has a ton of drama-laden shows to choose from either on free TV or on cable (that I'm already paying for). I can get interpersonal melodrama from a ton of shows on the CW already. I can also choose from a ton of shows on cable. What makes the producers of Discovery think that they have a product that is so unique that I would be willing to pay for yet another service in order to watch it? I haven't seen anything in the promos to excite me enough to type in my credit card number. And I'm sure I'm not alone.

CBS made a mistake by going this route. They should have simply put it on their over-the-air network for free. That would guarantee a bigger audience from the start.

You are forgetting that they sold the licence to netflix who probably paid a LOT for it. For them this is risk free. It's already been paid for that's why they brought this out probably to recoup the lost funds from Star Trek Beyond which crashed at the box office.

I wouldn't say it's risk free. If this thing bombs their credibility with Netflix and other outlets will be ruined. Netflix can't afford to keep wasting money.

Sure they can. It's not their money they are wasting remember. They'll just cane the series without prejudice. If they can spend 200 million dollars after a single movie, I am sure they can do other things such as cancelling the series completely.

It looks like the Abrams shit without being Abrams. I think that is what they were going for, since it was this same Alex Kurtzman which created the Kelvin-verse. I do think that there has been some intentional connections made.

From what I've seen it doesn't even qualify for "hate watching". Having to sit through this show would simply be fatiguing. Where's the fun in that?

It is fatiguing, and emotionally draining too. I did my hate watch on Kodi. I have watched every episode, and I know now more than ever that Star Trek is dead. It will likely remain dead as long as Paramount/CBS own it. I will hate watch whatever I can stand in Season 2, but I am not expecting much.

Season 2 might be interesting to watch (at first) to see what changes the writers were forced to make to try and fix this sinking ship. It won't work of course but it will be funny to see how they try to make the characters more likable.

Then again, the producers might double-down on their stupidity and will give us more of the same crap story and crap characters we have now, thereby cementing the death of the show.
