Ridley Scott to Direct New 'Blade Runner' Installment

After revisiting his classic Alien with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, Ridley Scott is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film from the past. Scott has signed on to direct and produce a new installment of Blade Runner. He’ll make the film with Alcon Entertainment, producing with Alcon partners Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. This would be the most high profile project for Alcon since The Blind Side. They got control of the franchise earlier this year, but it's a whole different ballgame with Scott at the helm.

I’m not getting a clear sense at this point whether Scott intends to do a sequel or a prequel to the 1982 film that was loosely based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?...

It's about time someone rebooted this concept! Hopefully Scott won't mess it up. ;)

They need to tread very carefully here.

I must remember to watch the original before this comes out.

I know the original has sort of a cult status, but I didn't find it all that great. A present day edition has got to be able to turn out better.

I just rewatched it, I don't know how they could go about doing this. A total redo? A prequel or a sequel?
A sequel would probably ruin the ending of the first one, A prequel would feel like Terminator Salvation to me....so I guess a total reboot?
Who to use for the roles? Total Newbies?

One thing however, the special effects might end up being really cool.

I think it's just a complete do-over with 21st century movie making techniques.

If this is the case, then I will be curious to see who they choose to play the roles. The wrong actors could destroy it IMO. ;)

Knowing the way modern "filmmaking" has been going, we'll probably get a musclebound dude in a loincloth standing on top of a building screaming "I...AM...A...REPLICANT!!!!" then doing some sort of slo-mo combat move.

I dunno dude. Stuff like Blade runner and Logans Run I think could survive a "modern makeover", simply because the stories behind them are pretty timeless in of themselves. Sure, bad choices in actors and such could make a mess of them, but in typical scifi fason, if the remake is considered junk by most people, they will just be ignored for the most part. Barberella however, I can see not working because as a movie it is very much a "product of it's time" Let's face it it's not exactly a "stellar story", but for it's time it was very "risque". To achieve that same level of "risque" in todays world however, well, lets just say you might as well be shooting a porn movie. :P

Ehm... Terminator Salvation plays in the future, not the past. ;)

I can see it now. I dont like it! Everything today is different and the effects in Blade Runner are good old fashioned lighting, some basic CGI/matte, and real live special effects done with real steam and real water and floodlights. The LOOK is going to be extremely hard to update without ruining it. And the character Deckhard...who would do it? I could see Colin Farrel or perhaps Joe Flanagan doing the role, and perhaps a pale classic beauty like Anne Hathaway for Rachel. But still, the look of it, the FEEL of it is non-transferrable IMO.

Logan's Run....it could be redone, as could Soylent Green. The premise was timeless...but Blade Runner? Maybe. The idea of making replicants doesnt translate in today's world, Why would we make them?

Plus the dystopia theme has been done to death the past few years. One reason the 09 Star Trek film was such a hit was the optimism underlying it.
