Does it really count if the FIRST movie is stupid?

Stupid movies lead to even stupider sequels.

Don't forget there are actually two "Highlander 2" movies. The original one was completely incoherent nonsense and one of the worst movies ever made. The awfulness was largely from the studio interfering and recutting the film from what Russell Mulcahy originally intended. Mulcahy actually raised money, got the right and remade the film into the "Renegade Edition". Here's the story - yes Mulcahy made a bad film but he owned it and worked to make it better:

I wasn't crazy about T3, either. T1 was great but T2 stands out as an epic achievement. It conveyed the hopelessness of a bleak, inevitable future to a masterful degree. This is what really put Cameron on the map. Then he went all looney and made Avatar and has decided to remain an Avatar sequel machine.

Alien - great premise executed fairly well (should have stuck with director's cut)
Aliens - James Cameron turns a great premise into a stupid 80's action movie
Alien Cubed - stake driven into the heart of the premise
Alien Resurrection -- should have left the franchise dead and buried
Prometheus -- steaming turd on a bed of leaf lettuce with cat piss dressing -- Bon appetit!

Highlander 2: As stated before it depends on which version - Renegade Cut is not that bad.

Aliens: Have to disagree; this is a really good film. One of the first military scifi films that actually "felt" right.

    Alien 3: Slop

T3: Total screwup. The combination of an incoherent plot (the explanation of how there could still even be a Skynet after T2 was to put it lightly farfetched) and Kristanna Loken's cringeworthy performance made this a mess.

Just "I wasnt crazy about T3"? No clever remark about it? No commentary? :( It filled in a necessary part of the canon...the moment the machines turned on humans. Judgement Day itself. I would be okay with a remake using a different Terminator. I liked the introduction of Katherine Brewster.

Think with Alien and Aliens, is they are two very different movies. One is a twist on the B-Movie plot (rawr monster wants to kill you) but with grade A quality and other is a representation of the Vietnam War (all the firepower in the world can't defeat a determined enemy).

The reason why I like Aliens is that it shows the complete ineffectiveness of the marines, yes during engagements they can blitz the xenomorphs, but notice they kept on losing (hence the Vietnam War attitude of the Colonial Marines) they lost the will to fight, the aliens have a unified sense of purpose. It might considered heavy handed today in terms of the message but back then, it can show what you can do with a franchise and explore it in different ways, like for example what happens when the military gets involves and deals with a unique threat. Whether you consider this to be a betrayal of the first, I can see why people would see it as inferior, though my love for the M56 Smartgun overrides all logic in this case.

As for Cameron, well he went down hill after Titanic. Avatar is just the by product of an egotistical mind thinking one can do no wrong just because he is successful.

Terminator series. I'll ignore the obvious problem of the second (time travel weeeee) but the 3rd was passable but it didn't need to show the judgement day/skynet's rise to power.
Terminator 4: Oh dear lord why. This was an utterly pointless movie, in fact the introduction of the 2nd movie has more bleak scenes and action than this entire movie together. Also why are the humans using standard weaponry, I thought we've established that typical firearms don't work against the Terminators, also establishing that the humans stole weaponry off of the machines (hence the plasma based weaponry).

It did fill the canon but that's all it was, filler. It wasn't executed in the same manner as T1 and T2. I found it corny, incoherent and felt like it was slapped together kind of last-minute. Arnold phoned in his performance and the cast was mismatched. They didn't bring back Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton turned down her part in the original script because her character arc was not evolving and was too similar to T2, hinting that the script was already poorly written. It was just a badly made movie.

From what I understand Edward Furlong became a heroin addict (and other things) and ruined his career completely. Not surprising no one would take a chance on him. Oddly enough, the actor who replaced him, Nick Stahl, is now a serious meth addict and has ruined his own career. Don't know if it's the Terminator curse or what, but it's sad to see two promising actors throw it all way for drugs. They're both still fairly young but they look old and worn out already. Sad, very sad.

Aliens is an military scifi action film with horror overtones. Alien is horror with scifi overtones. So two different genres, and both films are effective in their genres. And yes Aliens reflected James Cameron's views on Vietnam but I would note that most of the Marines problems stemmed from an inexperienced CO who made a VERY bad tactical decision. And their morale did not break even after the fiasco in the power plant.

Overall, Aliens was respectful of the Marines and gave pretty much all of them heroic ends - even Lt. Gorman whose bad decision caused the whole problem got to go out heroically. This is in direct contrast to the drivel known as "Avatar".

I thought Alien was superbly done for the time it was produced in. There's way more to the back story than is presented (the Weyland-Yutani evil corporation's involvement for one). In the director's cut they show the alien reproducing on its own. There was no queen. Cameron came up with the nonsense of a "queen bee" alien because he lacks imagination. His mind is concrete bound in that he can't think past the point of "what is" to the point of "what could be", hence the cartoon known as Aliens.

And need I mention the flaw in Aliens where they put a colony of 300 people on the planet without noticing that there's this giant alien ship crashed there? What happened to the signal it was cranking out that the Nostromo easily picked up 57 years earlier? Did the batteries suddenly die on this ship that had been crashed there for God knows how long? And why of all places did Weyland-Yutani decide to suddenly put a colony there? Supposedly they didn't know about the place at all, yet 57 years later they have a colony of 300 people living there. :rolleye0014:
