A space exploration/ mining company is the now the first to have won a US govt approval to begin moon mining ops starting in 2017

See if they keep to schedule

Um huh? Since when does ANYBODY need approval from anyone to do anything on the Moon? Did planting a flag there in 1969 make it US territory? :( I sincerely hope that capitalism and commercialism and ESPECIALLY the US flavors of those things do not expand into space.

As is typical for Motley Fool their article doesn't quite cover all the details. Moon Express was going through the governmental approval processes for it (a US Company) to launch a moon shot. Under the UN Outer Space Treaty signatories (the US is one such) are responsible for supervising their own NGOs and private organizations to ensure anything done out there is treaty compliant.

It still bothers me that any treaty or agreement or restrictions of any kind are being applied to celestial bodies other than Earth in the solar system. Those bodies belong to nobody. In fact, no land on earth really belong to anyone and all of us at the same time. I am hoping that by the time the Common Man is ready to venture into space that there is no more capitalism or profit. Those things enslave Humanity.

another fact that makes shows like THE EXPANSE and its plot (of corporate control of everything) even more legit/ believable.

Everything is in place for such a environment seen in THE EXP now, except for the space flight part, in the way of legal and economic issues.

I am thinking these "treaties" were being discussed quite a long time before even sputnik was launched.

The point of the treaty is the signatories agree that no one can claim ownership of any part of any celestial body. And then it goes into more detail on cooperative development of said celestial bodies and administration.

I wish that applied on earth too.

i think the fact that no one can claim prior rights is also a big factor; no aboriginals or "once was claimed by our lost captain..." etc
