A woman claims she was attacked in a San Francisco bar for wearing the Google Glass device.

Sarah Slocum, a tech writer, wrote on her Facebook page that she had the Google Glass ripped off her face by an unnamed man, at a San Francisco bar named Molotov's, as well as having her purse and phone stolen.

Slocum says she was showing someone how the device worked when she was confronted by two women who she claims verbally assaulted her for wearing the high-tech glasses.

"OMG so you'll never believe this but... I got verbally and physically assaulted and robbed last night in the city, had things thrown at me because of some *** Google Glass haters ..." Slocum wrote on her Facebook account.

Brian Lester, a witness, said that people in the bar may have been upset about being recorded by the device.

"She [Slocum] was running around very excited... and people were telling her, 'you're being an *** take those glasses off."

Ah technology, turning people into obnoxious "Glass-holes" one idiot with more money than sense at a time. :encouragement:

I predict the following with regard to Google Glass (even those with prescription lenses):

  • They will be prohibited at work
  • Laws will be passed to make it illegal to wear them while driving or operating any vehicle
  • They will not be permitted in movie theaters
  • They will not be allowed in Federal or State buildings
  • They will not be allowed in hospitals
  • They will not be allowed in police stations
  • They will be prohibited in college classrooms
  • They will be prohibited in locker rooms, bathrooms and anywhere there would be privacy issues impacting others.
I think the technology is wrong for this time in history. There is still too much societal fragmentation. It would work in a communist or socialist society, but not in a capitalist one. I will not allow anyone to wear one in my home if the situation arises.

WTF has privacy got to do with communism, socialism, or capitalism??

Nothing. A capitalist society rewards victors in competition. Part of competition is having access to private information about opponents. Google Glass would compromise privacy and security on the most basic level and every level above that. In a socialist or communist society, competition is not rewarded. Cooperation is.

In a socialist or communist society, Google Glass would be awesome. It could keep track of places of interest that you have visited, tell you what you missed and make suggestions about similar venues. :) It could tell your family where you have been, and you could actually share your vacation with them. But only in a non-capitalist society would the risk of this information being used for marketing or profit be eliminated.

Im a firm believer that the beginning of the Information Age was the start of the decline of Capitalism. The systems of nature do not have an analogy to capitalism. But communism and socialism are seen in nature in all levels of life. The exploration of this planet with technology like Google Glass is only going to be good if it cannot be used for profit, marketing or oppression.

Huh? Are you okay? You are usually sharper than this. :) Its not in the "future", its in the now.

I wont allow it in my home because I dont want its contents or things which go on in there being recorded or transmitted to Google+, the NSA scanned for value. Already, webcams are taking pictures of users at regular intervals, placing faces on MAC addresses, cross referencing with owned devices and downloaded/installed software, etc. Right now, they cannot see everything. Google Glass could change that for them.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/27/gchq-nsa-webcam-images-internet-yahoo

This is a joint NSA and GCHQ project, and it takes pictures of you using your own built in webcam, phone front facing camera or tablet integrated webcam. Because I know this, I have mine taped over. On my tablet, the front facing camera is blocked with a perfectly cut circle of electrical tape. :) Same with my phone. But the masses continue to sheepishly ignore these risks...or remain ignorant to them.

Sigh.
Whatever dude.
Someone from the other side of the continent posted your personal info because they had a "beef" with you, and that was a citizen, not the government.

believe in the tape dude, it works just like tinfoil.

None of this happened to me. :) And because I am taking measures against it, it never will. The tape will prevent the NSA or anyone one else from using my integrated webcam to capture pictures of me or my home or wherever I am without my permission. The rear facing camera is not that big of a deal. But integrated webcams on laptops, phones, and now XBox One are available to them. Google Glass is the only mobile device which has the ability to allow mapping of interior spaces to a level of detail not before possible. Dont you ever wonder when Google sent a vehicle down your street to get street views of your home for Google Maps? ONE person living in a city could allow Google to map hundreds of interior spaces using somebody's Google Glass. Not just places of interest, but people's homes, workplaces, patients in hospitals, etc.

Honestly I don't think there's much we can do. Sure we will pass more privacy laws but the technology exists for everyone to have a personal recording device and it's only going to get easier to conceal them. This chick is simply one of the first examples of the problems that are going to arise from 21st Century tech.

Gotta love dickheads, they ruin it for everybody. (And I don't believe for one second that this chick was simply showing someone how it works. She was being an intrusive dick to everyone in the bar.)
