I would like to see the US Congress and President Obummer regulate what I do on my own computer.

I agree. Just LOL. :) I would be forced to put this back on:

Could they make geo-location "hiding" illegal?

No. I dont see how they could. However....they can mandate that you take shots, or give up bodily fluids so who knows? The Patriot Act and it's brothers and sisters in other countries might already allow it. :(

NetFlix Canada is more than underwhelming. At least I get to see the "100" wihout commercials.

I really don't watch that much TV anymore, so it won't matter to me what goes down.

Like gate said . Netfix Canada has very little content so many go tither and fro to watch the good stuff . Funny how Netflix does not care but the movie owner people do . This sounds exactly like the music download issue . If Netflix has bought the rights to play a show and there adds say that we can watch our shows anywhere , then why are the movie owner freeks all up in arms ?
One word ...

Greed .

Looks like we will soon only be able to surf what they will let us surf ... Power does not like it when it can't control something does it .

power can only stay in power when they have complete information control.... :P

Yep, and they can NEVER get it because the technology they are using to try and get this control is beyond their understandings. It is in the realm of geeks, and geeks are the ones who have the power to destroy the intelligence infrastructure (if it ever came to that). :icon_cool: You cannot train somebody to be a geek, just like you cannot train somebody to be an artist.

I have a VPN I use and Hulu does this too. No more streaming my USA subscriptions over here. If they see your Ip is on a vpn, you are blocked from streaming. Ah well, I tried to be nice, there is more than one way to skin a cat or watch my fav shows. Ones that Hulu noone but themselves to thank for being used.

I can see them locking DNS services, but I do not see how they can do anything about the VPN without compromising the inherent security that is VPN (Virtual PRIVATE Networking). Geolocking should have no effect on a VPN user unless Netflix requires a GPS or location disclosure requirement.

There is no way to know who is using a VPN. The only way they can block a VPN user is by identifying which IPs belong to VPN service providers. In any case, they're getting much more clever with rotating IPs. The only way to have a list of IPs belonging to VPN is to either pass a law in the US forcing all providers of VPN to publish their IP blocks or pay people to play with VPN services 24/7 and manually log IPs on the other end.

hate to be the downer but i am guessing that about 120 yrs ago ppl were saying "how can the govt keep me off the road with my automobile? i can take my horse and buggy anywhere without govt interference."Pay the govt a fee to access the road? License, what's a license?"

Now I know I am far from a techie, but i am guessing that if they really, really wanted to (which i do not think they do) couldn't they (govt and corporate collaborators) devise a way that anyone desiring to get on the net be licensed and in full compliance with ANYTHING they ask?

"No sir, you don't HAVE to give your location or turn your webcam on (1984 vid screens anyone?), but if you want on the internet, well..."

just like today when govt agencies and some companies ask for SSN's or other private info to get something (service, assistance, etc)-when questioned, they tell you that no "giving your SSN is not required, but your ability to receive service may be restricted or denied unless you do"

They could do that. But what would happen is that a sub-internet or alter-internet would replace it. And geeks would build it, just like they created the internet. Technically, groups of people could form their own intranets. VPN-like protocols could be created to tunnel through the internet just as they do now, but would be custom protocols only understood by the endpoints. Many ways to get around it.

You have to remember, the internet was not created by the government. The government did not even hire the geeks who created it. They arose from the general population and not on college campuses. Steve Jobs did not have a degree. He dropped out of Reed College, but he founded and ran the most profitable company ever to exist PLUS Pixar. He was a Buddhist, and he smoked pot. :)

I will not live in fear of anything. Fear is the mind killer.
