True Detective

Anyone watched this? Came out a few weeks ago. I like the general atmosphere, and when did McConaughey become a good actor? The story's a bit of a slow burner and sorta generic, stuff Hannibal gets through in one episode. Mostly just like the atmosphere and the Louisiana setting is done well. I really haven't been back since Katrina though. Overall, it's alright. Still has the stereotypical HBO elements though.

Some people like naked female breasts.

I'm all for breasts, but when the tits are more there for titillation rather than serving the story, then it's just a turn off to both titillation and story (GoT is the worst at this, of the HBO shows I've seen). And there's more HBO elements there too. The typical "tell not show" aspect where they have some lame, contrived excuse to have monologue-ing. Sopranos did this with the psych sessions, Deadwood had the bj monologues. I forget what else had that. The typical cliches are there as well but because HBO is doing them, it's suddenly compelling drama! They seem to get a free pass on lots of things. HBO is extremely overrated, to me.

Anyways, as for the show if you're still watching, I really hope that Rust doesn't turn out to be the killer just cause of his past undercover work with shady people, him hanging out with that prostitute and doing drugs, his familiarity with occult symbols, his detachment from women, the way he has all these intimate insights into the psychology of the murderer, and him having nearly all the breakthroughs in the case instead of the other guy. It'd be a bit too ham-fisted if it turns out to be him. I'm guessing they were under pressure from government and hardass boss to make a collar so they pinned it on some fall guy earlier.

Well, I assume the show will get a it of a supernatural bent now, sorry if you don't like that stuff :(

For your edification folks if you are interested in this part of True detective
I must admit, I feel I should give this show a shake now.

http://kinginyellow.wikia.com/wiki/Have_You_Seen_The_Yellow_Sign?

Now, Most of what *I* previously knew about the King in yellow is more drawn from the Lovecraftian "Hastur" and "Carcossa" mythology, I have never actually read the book that Lovecraft drew his inspiration from for *his* King in yellow.
Of course, if you are interested in reading it.......................

It's not going to be supernatural, think one of the writers said that. It just has quite a bit of occult references. It's just one writer and one director for all of the episodes.

Well, I am glad for you guys then. I assume they will go more for the psychological aspect instead.
The King In Yellow is an interesting analogy to totalitarian life, and that may fuel the show to be good.

Didn't really care for the first season, did a lot of cliche cop stories but HBO so it's all of a sudden considered 'good'.
