Toho to make new Godzilla film for 2016 release

This sounds great, but it also gives me pause...they are not going to cooperate with the Gareth Edwards crew or use the awesome new Godzilla? Before the 2014 Godzilla, Toho might have been able to get away with a suited up actor and the old effects. But Godzilla 2014 changed that forever for them IMO. Here is a quote from your link:

The head of the new Godzilla project, veteran producer Taichi Ueda, told the press that, though Toho will not spend the $200 million reportedly lavished on the American “Godzilla,” “The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.” Ueda added that Toho hopes to make Godzilla a character that “will represent Japan and be loved around the world” by the time of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

I really doubt that is going to happen. Godzilla no longer represents Japan. And why do they want him to be loved as some kind of hero? He smashes cities! He is a MONSTER, not a pet. I used to hate the way Toho would adopt these kaiju and then make them into heroes to be loved by children. It happened with Godzilla, Minya, Mothra and Gamera.

I agree the potential for confusion here is high. Is Toho's Goji separate from Legendary's? Really I'd rather if Toho is going to do this they use Edward's Goji and make the film fit at least a bit into that continuity.

I agree. You and I are both traditional kaiju fans, but we are also Americans and our interest in Godzilla and the kaiju is not the same as the Japanese kaiju generation that corresponds to the Boomers in America. This new Godzilla has spoiled me. He is awesome. I have reservations about his debut movie, but this next one is going to be kickass. Im not really wanting to see smoke bombs and suited up kaigu and miniatures anymore. They are great for the old movies, but not in 2015.

im afraid that the Toho Goji will look silly in comparison and draw ridicule. :(

More goodies - Toho has their director and producer and....plan to make their Goji even physically bigger than Legendary's!

Anno and Higuchi are good choices for the film. that said, I do think this "we need our Goji to be bigger than Edwards" to be a bit naff. When does it stop....when Godzilla is so large he influences the tides?

And...first images of the new Toho Godzilla....

I'm not feeling this one. It basically looks like Godzilla was swimming in a huge pool of feces....

Cheeze-zilla? Looks really out of step after seeing the awesome 2014 Godzilla. I do not think Toho can make an excuse for tradition when it comes to Godzilla anymore. The miniatures, the paper thin plots, the shallow characters...it has to move forward now. I love my classic Kaiju movies, but new ones have to be new.

I understand they are planning to CGI the creature too but that image looks awful. The eyes look terrible and the whole body looks like (as I said) Godzilla was covered in feces.

I still don't understand why they didn't just use the Legendary Goji - they own the character after all.
