Threat Against Emma Watson A Hoax

There was a threat made on the site www.4Chan.org that said that nude pictures of actress Emma Watson would be posted on that site in retaliation for a speech she made about gender equality.

It turns out that the threat was a hoax by some marketing company out to close down 4Chan. They seem to have forgotten that even making the threat, whether or not they intended to carry out what was being threatened, is still against the law.

I hope the Feds have a lot of fun with "Rantic Marketing". Lots and lots of fun. With a side of malice.

I've met the guy who runs 4Chan. I like him.

4Chan does not permit crap like those leaked photos to be posted, and if and when such things happen, they are taken down as soon as they are discovered. Contrary to popular belief, the site IS moderated, but the idiots at Faux Noise and their ilk would rather people think it's just some kind of completely anarchic nightmare over there.

People always view 4chan like some terrorist cell, all them conspiring. No its just a message board, and just because one person who is on there does on action is not representative of the whole group. The thing is, the social justice warriors need a boogey man, something which is faceless and can't be defended (as they think), so they use dehumanizing tactics against 4chan only to have their asses continually handed to them (oh it was a joyful moment when tumblr tried to invade 4chan).

These people whoever do these actions, should know that when you claim something like this, it will be investigated thoroughly. Its not like trial by mob.

On a side note. Why in the living sweet buggery would you have photos or video footage (nude or otherwise) of such actions on your cloud. Yes it is bad that people hacked your account, but you have to realize the risks involved, nothing on the internet is secure, you are a celebrity, you are a target, take the necessary precautions.

An article published on MTV's website about the hoax said that supposedly 4Chan threatened to release the mythical pics.

No, it wasn't 4Chan, it was someone who USED 4Chan's boards to make the threat. But I guess it's more titillating to say that it was 4Chan (moot) itself making such a threat.

Lousy writing and incorrect as hell.

Why is a threat to Emma Watson making the news? :) She is cute and all, but she is not an activist, to my knowledge. she isnt married to anyone that can make her into the second half of a media couple, she isn't politically controversial or religiously controversial, she does not have a leaked sex tape....so why is she making the news? I do find the way they did this hoax interesting though!

She made a pretty good speech before the UN where she just basically stated the obvious in regards to gender equality and feminism and a buch of pathetic MRAs got mad at her for suggesting that it is a good thing for men and women to be able to move beyond irrelevant gender stereotypes.

It made news because some jackasses from a marketing firm promptly made a false threat to Emma that they would reveal nekkid pics of her on 4Chan in retaliation for her speaking up.

The marketing firm did it simply to try to force 4Chan to be closed down. Now they're trying to track down the owner of the offending site/"firm" and we'll see what the Feds do from there, as threatening folks, even with no intent of actually following through, is still against the law.

I hope these assholes enjoy the special attention this brings them.

Yeah these guys are massive dicks for doing this.

It doesn't matter that it was a fake because all the uncertainty and stress Watson probably felt during this whole thing was certainly real. Not to mention all the douchebags on various websites who cheered on the notion of punishing her for speaking out about an issue she cares about by infrigning on her privacy.

As it turns out there isn't even a "firm". Business Insider and The Daily Dot have reported that this is that same bunch of dufuses that did the Family Guy scam and the NASA scam. Basically criminals who stage "marketing" using bots and other such crap, spoofing people into thinking they are someone else for purposes of the "campaign" which nets lots of clicks and grabbing the "click cash" and getting out before their true identities can be ascertained.

Still a threat even if it is a scam, and still federally actionable.

I'm smiling at the comeuppance they're facing and so richly deserve.

It's not too terribly hard to locate people, if you put your mind to it.

And it is also not too hard to remain completely invisible when you know exactly what you're doing.

Hence my use of the word "criminal". This time they went beyond a scam (which is a crime typically too) to attempted extortion. This might get the feds and Interpol involved. Eventually they'll find at least one of them who will roll on the others.

If I was straight -- and God knows I'm not -- I'd (probably) hit it. ;)
