This Band Sucks & Apple

Come on. In spite of whatever issues people may have with Bono today, U2 is still a legend.

OMG, if I never hear another song from the most overrated band in the world again it will be too soon.

This album was force downloaded (free, but forced) to every iPhone via iTunes, and not everyone was happy:

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/oct/15/u2-bono-issues-apology-for-apple-itunes-album-download

Bono actually apologized for giving away this album for free???
People always seem to need something to bitch about. That day, that's what it was.

"Oh, no, don't give me something for free that I can always delete off my device, but it'll stay in my Purchases folder forever, in case I decide I want to listen to something off it after all!"

While U2 doesn't generally float my boat, bitching about getting something for FREE seems a bit rude. It's not like he handed them a bag of rotting garbage (or second hand tuna sandwiches).

It's f#$%* u2 and they suck the bag big time . There's nothing good about this group and there arrogant f%$#s . Look how many people saying who the f#$% is u2 ! Exactly . I don't like a band that comes out and tells the world they are the greatest band of the 20th century . I don't like a band telling me and forcing me to listen to them cuz I knew nothing about them before . You know what ! Maybe if they were all they say they are then no one would delete there music . No one would be asking who the f#$% is u2 . No one would have raised a finger about there arrogant upload . No one like me would be getting angry over such a little thing as this as uploading there music to iTunes and filling up my cloud . Maybe someone like me would not be pissed about not even being able to remove until a month later when they build an app for that . !!! An app to remove there music !!! Seriously !!! . How arrogant of them !. How presumptuous of them !. Who do they think they are . Oh right . The greatest band of the 20th century . Of course . Everyone knew that !

Hey, Trip, you might want to talk to your doctor about checking your meds. They don't seem to be working properly.

As I said before, it's not a huge deal. It's nothing to get all worked up and hateful about. Don't you know how to delete music from your iDevices? It's not difficult to do, with or without an app.

I just don't understand your "whatever you do, don't give me anything for free" attitude.

Apple has ESPN, not ESP. They don't KNOW who you like and don't like.

I totally understand why you wouldnt want anything loaded into your cloud storage without your permission, but Apple actually DOES have permission. You gave it to them when you bought your Apple device. Having said that, I think that the thought behind the free album was that it was a gift from U2 (like it or not). Like Lit said, just delete it. :) Also know that you are not at all protected from future forced downloads from Apple of software or music or video or anything else they may want to "gift" you. I personally like U2. :) But if any artist forced something on me (not gonna happen outside of Apple), I would be irritated, then I would delete the offending items. Just sayin!

Dump Apple. You are a geek, not an iSheep.

You do know it's Apple who forced that download on you, right? U2 doesn't own iTunes, Apple or have free access to your iClutter storage. Whether you like U2 or not, your anger is completely misplaced in this case.

In this case, Apple timed the push of the U2 album with the release of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and Apple Watch.

http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/mobile/not-every-itunes-user-happy-about-getting-free-u2-album-n200076

So, Apple used U2 to make a splash for these launches and perhaps mistakenly believed that U2 which has sold over 150 million albums worldwide, might be a draw. Why they would just forcibly add the album to every Apple iCloud account is bizarre, but not insane. To be fair, I dont like the way Samsung would force me to keep their apps installed if I did not know how to root my phone and remove them. Samsung DOES install software one might not want if you keep TouchWiz and remain stock and not rooted. But Google doesnt do that and the push installs stop if you root the phone and take out the Samsung junk.

Note it did not download it to your device - it simply was in purchases available for download.

Yep. They added it to Apple iCloud accounts and they will only download if you click them. Unfortunately, many Apple users play stuff directly from the iCloud accounts and they see it in there and that is what caused the furor. I bet they dont do it again!

Actually Bluce since I have calmed down just a little from my rant I would agree with you but U2 had to also give permission to Apple to do what they did so it is just not an Apple operation . U2 have the rights to there music and they allowed Apple to up load there music to iTunes . Having it setup as so the user could not delete it is very unreasonable . I have gotten plenty of free stuff before with iTunes and was always able to delete a product through iTunes . Users could not remove the U2 upload to iTunes until an app was designed to remove it . That was what got me mad . Why was it imbedded into our devices ? Is this going to be the standard practice now ?. It just spells Orwelliness to me . Listen to this . Read this . Do this . Apple are certainly the main culprits here but U2 had to give the go ahead . I'm happy now that an app has been designed to remove it . Maybe apple learned something here and so did U2 and other groups as well for future freebies forced apon you that you have no interest in .

Yes but what happened was that let's say one member in your family likes that band and your all on the same cloud account and they downloaded it , such as I am with my family . Then everyone now had them on there devices and could not delete it until the app was designed to remove it .
My entire family has disabled our cloud now on our devices and now only turn it back on if we see something of interest that we would like to have on our device . My iPhone was filling up with the soundtrack from Skylanders which my son was grabbing from itunes. I've been able to delete that soundtrack quite easily .
Gives you back just a smidgen of control again by just turning off your cloud .

:) :) :)

:) That is the price of wearing that Apple brand on your ass. :anim_59: Nothing like that has ever happened with any other mobile carrier. Perhaps that is because no other phone out there requires you to only use a certain app to upload and download stuff (iTunes). None of them force you to use cloud storage, and nobody is sitting at the "top" deciding what you should and should not have. You easily have the skills to set up Owncloud and have your own private cloud syncing your devices. And YES, there is an iOS client for it. You are 100% in control of Owncloud, and you can even encrypt your data server-side if you are going to pay a host.

As far as this thing goes, U2 gave permission because Apple paid them to. When the fans of a band are also CEOs or department heads, you see attention given to stuff that makes no sense. :) I have a Depeche Mode fan for a boss, as well as being a Dodger fan, so when songs are picked for stuff, Depeche Mode. When sports are referred to, or colors chosen for stuff, it's Dodger Blue or Dodgers. U2 was releasing this album anyway, so this was a good payday for them.

True enough, it was handled in a ham fisted manner.

Giving away an album is nice. But placing it in someone's "purchased" area can be problematic. It would have made more sense to just feature it in the iTunes stores with the word FREE in the price area. Most people understood what it was but some brought it down and hence the app to remove it.
