This device is going to be available in every way traditional watches are, in terms of style. Tank watches, sport watches, girly watches, gold and silver and perhaps jewel encrusted ones later. Apple will become the next Fossil Watch. But wait...who is wearing watches these days? In the summertime, watches are incompatible with $50.00 tanning salon tans, and unless this watch is dust and waterproof AND in range of your iPhone (I will get to that later), this is going to just be a very expensive cheap digital watch, made with very expensive materials and costing a lot of money.

To be fair, this device will be loaded with sensors which can detect pulse, act as a pedometer, access functions on the phone, give vibratory feedback, and lots of other tricks. But in order to use that stuff you have to also have an iPhone that will support it. I hope nobody thought Apple was going to open the gates to the outside from it's walled garden, did they? :anim_59:

I think they are going to sell a ton of these watches. And because they will only work with an iPhone, the value of iPhones will be enhanced by the presence of the watch, as well as give owners an extra dollop of cred in the Apple world of things.

Although the phone industry seems to think that wearable tech is the next big thing, I am doubtful. Smartwatches like the Pebble and Samsung's own Gear smartwatch do not seem appropriate to every lifestyle. I do not mind picking up my phone to read messages or make calls or use navigation. I do not like the feeling of a watch on my wrist every day, and I have not worn one in more than 10 years on a regular basis. I own a couple of nice watches I use for dress occasions, but I do not see the need to wear them when there is a clock on my phone even when the screen is locked. :)

Anyway, the Apple Watch is here. She arrived fashionably late to the party, but I think she will be the Belle of the Ball in wearable tech.

I started laughing when they did the Apple Watch presentation. Really I just don't see wearable tech like this taking off until it is autonomous (needs no smartphone to operate). Had they done that they would have had something - in essence put a low powered radio in the watch (it need not be LTE because all you're pulling is Calendar, email and the like) and make the data complimentary as no one is browsing the web on a watch. Sort of like how the 3G on the Kindle works that is complimentary.

I agree with you. And this watch seems more ludicrous when you remember the first iPod Nano, which was basically designed to be worn like a watch. It failed Apple because it did not sell well. The Samsung Galaxy Gear is not doing great, and neither are other smartwatches. But the reason I suspect is that the phone manufacturers have failed to realize that this so-called wearable tech "trend" is largely something they have dreamed up on their own. The trend I am observing in real life is that people are trying to dump their traditional watches. Not replace them with fancy digital wearables, but dump them altogether as far as regular items they wear. I do not see young people suddenly wearing watches. It could happen with this Apple Watch, but somehow I doubt it.

Just another mindless assault on the wallet

Keep telling ppl what they "have to" buy enough and they will believe they "have to" buy it

So how long before they get this stuff small enough and functional enough to implant a smart device under the skin?

When they do, I want to see how the salespeople sell that "need"--imagine the process to get equipment upgrades? The antibiotics involved... the ability to "track you" no matter if you are running naked in the woods is a disturbing idea

-----------------------------------------------

And I can't see anything going wrong with their "apple pay" system--I am sure none of those unscrupulous hackers out there will leave it alone all in the name of global love and hugs (and markets) :anim_59:

People thinking this Apple Watch is so great just may have short memories. Dont they remember this?:

The iPod Nano 6th Gen still sells for around $180.00 at Amazon. You can find them even cheaper on eBay. These cute little devices do not need your iPhone. But they also do not have the sensors, bluetooth and the ability to display or control stuff on your iPhone. However, you did not NEED an iPhone to use it. You could use iTunes for Windows to load it with whatever you needed. But it still failed, because people did not see a need to have this when they could simply use their phones.

This new Apple Watch is a device nobody asked for. I think it will experience a short burst of interest and then fail. Without an iPhone, it cant do most of what it was designed for.

Doesn't matter....

whats the price of one watch? how many are predicted to sell the first week?

That is what apple wants-the profits, they don't care one iota for an actual "innovation" or anything that is actually practical/useful. They do not care about making anyone's life easier via tech

the more of this stuff they sell, the more one's wallet lightens (or credit card bill piles up!), their desk drawer piles with more crap and they have yet another way of attempting to track you and what you watch and buy to info-mine you and try to sell you the "next big thing"

its all bs--so much of this stuff is so un-needed.

sure, a few ppl may have a real use for these things--and "smart" phones, etc, but most ppl do not need them with all of the crap that's on them and most ppl hardly even use a qrtr of the technology potential that is on them

BUT, ask them why they got it, and they can come up with a multitude of rationalizations for why they "needed" it.

I have an old flip phone, had for about 5 yrs now. No contract, and I pay nothing for full service on a national network

the thing never leaves my car--its a tool, nothing more, handy for if there is an emergency or if my wife needs to contact me
