I caught the trailer and it looks like Token S. Preston Esquire IV bites the dust. We only see him once about to get his head chopped off and eaten then no more. The rest of the cast we see several times.

The cannibals are from the comic book. Although fans guessed it last year, the show runners were publicly denying it.

So...exactly how are these cannibals different from the zeds in terms of a threat? It seems pointless.

They're humans, they think, they use weapons, make traps, use strategies. Zeds just walk around aimlessly and either overwhelm in numbers or kind of sneak up on you.

:), no I meant in terms of the context of the show. If the core premise of the show was to follow a group of intrepid "regular" people on their journey through a zombie infested post-apocalyptic world, why bring cannibals into it? I can hear the conversation with the writers now...

Producer - "How is season 5 coming along?"

Writer - "Oh just fine! We just need to figure out how to get the effects right for the cannibals in the show."

Producer '"Did you say Hannibal in the show?"

Writer - "No, silly! I said cannibals! They are a big part of this next season"

Producer - "What about the zombies? This show is still about zombies, isnt it?"

Writer - "Zombies are soooo.....last season. Cannibals are the new zombies"

Producer - "I dont like it. Lets go over it"

Writer - "You are too late. Half the season is already in the can. Just trust us, lets just go with the cannibals, mkay?"

I'm with Yongin in that cannibalism doesn't make sense at this point in the story. They aren't the Donner party stranded in the snow with no options left. They are a handful of humans living in a world where there is a plethora of wild game to trap or shoot, not to mention farm animals that might still be around. (If left unchecked the deer population explodes.) And that doesn't even take into account all the canned and preserved food stuffs that millions of dead people aren't eating.

So, yeah, cannibalism = dumb idea the writer(s) came up with (Kirkman is affiliated with the show hence his dumb idea becomes their dumb idea). It's just an attempt to raise the bar on being shocking -- which the idiot fans of this show will no doubt swallow and love. :rolleye0014:

At least my SGU proposal had some plot merit....

This is just sad (from your article)

So why not get some more Walking Dead going? Despite increasing critical frustration with the show, it only does better and better in the ratings (it’s now the highest-rated scripted program in the history of basic cable) and could maybe allow AMC to establish another bulwark on the calendar.

:moody:. I think what is happening is that the savvy and the cutting edge people have been leaving (and continue to leave) cable programming at an exponential rate. We are talking millions of people, and increasing:

http://www.king5.com/story/news/2014/08/24/more-people-dropping-cable-tv/14531885/

Excerpt:

Michael Greeson, co-founder and director of research for the Diffusion Group, has been tracking cord-cutting trends since 2007. For the past several years, his surveys have consistently shown that about 15 percent of adult broadband users who subscribe to a pay-TV service are considering ditching it within the next six months.

That more people aren't jumping ship is likely thanks to cable operators' aggressively working to keep subscribers when they call to cancel. They're offering quiet deals that their websites don't advertise in hopes of at least converting a would-be cord cutter into what's called a "cord shaver" — someone who scales down his or her service but doesn't bail on cable entirely.

This is having the same effect as smartphones and tablets had on fax machines, cable service, home VoIP landlines and satellite TV. The savvy are leaving and what is left are the dinosaurs and slow adopters. The audiences left for these shows are also watching the other garbage their stations offer, and still being reached by advertisers.

and WITH all of those other food options it would further suggest that this is a group of ppl that existed as- perhaps-a cult or something PRIOR to the disease coming

They ate ppl before any sickness came--maybe doing so made them somehow immune to the disease [[or, they THINK eating ppl makes them immune, and that re-enforces their previous behavior]]
