Lousy opening. The first thing I thought of was that they should simply set the walkers at the fence on fire. Why they haven't thought of this after 7+ months is beyond me (the new show runner said the time line was 7+ months later). And the symbolism of the gun buried in the yard was dumb. Like we're supposed to think that's all deep and shit cuz it portends bad stuff happening.
Then there was the scene with the geek kid shaking Daryl's hand, which was just god awful writing. Seriously, that had to be a first draft that they shot because it was such a clunky scene. Terrible, just terrible.
Then they're back at the fence spiking walkers en masse. Again, just toss some accelerant on them and ignite it. Easy peasy. But no, they have to exhaust themselves by physically spiking every walker's head (and getting covered in blood and guts in the process).
Then the storyline with Rick and that crazy woman was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring! It was obvious what was going to happen. And no, I don't give a hard turd about Rick's "soul" or his psychological state. That whole story line was just a lot of masturbating jibberish intended to be deep but succeeding in just being lame.
And the helicopter on the roof gimmick was simply a "INSERT MINDLESS ACTION SEQUENCE HERE" thing. It was a bone they threw to the masturbating fanboys and was so full of holes that I was bored with it before it even happened. I mean really, we're to believe this crashed Chinook heli held all those people that were on the roof? How did they get up there? And how did they get out of the heli since the doors weren't popped plus
The only good part was having the nerd die and turn into a zed at the end. Now we're left to wonder if it was from swine flu or tainted crops or tainted meat (pig and deer) and remember when Daryl licked his fingers before shaking hands with the kid? But most likely it's in the water supply since they referenced it throughout the episode. The writers think they're being uber clever by dropping all these red herrings into the mix.
Oh yeah, and what's with Michonne wasting time looking for the governor? (He's probably hiding in the prison anyway) In a world where you're struggling to survive on a daily basis I don't think anyone would waste time on a revenge hunt.
