The Core - Unintentional comedy

The Core is a 2003 action / Sci-fi flick starring Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank. It's the kind of movie you watch later at night on cable or Netflix (like I just did) and afterward wonder a bit at it.

Basically the plot is about a ship sent to the center of the Earth to restart the rotation of the core of the planet. Along the way our intrepid crew battles dangers and makes noble sacrifices but ultimately prevails.

To be honest, the story is pretty preposterous. And some of the scenes of disaster while having nice SFX are so goofy in tone they make the film feel like a comedy.

On the good side, some of the acting is good and the mission itself is a solid adventure. The pacing of the parts aboard the ship is nice also.

However, aside from the silliness of the disaster scenes the scenes above ground just overall don't fit with the rest of the film. You have characters whose attitude literally makes no sense if they are facing impending doom coupled with the usual (and overdone) Hollywood trope of the secret conspiracy.

Overall, it's not horrible. Expect to laugh at what should be inappropriate times but also to be entertained at others.

you know, IMHO the stargate episode, Fallout, (which brought back jonas for a finale to his character) was much better than the core. Had more a plot and was more interesting. :P hubby likes the Core and I love to heckle it! :P :P

The one I saw had them meet up with underground people and they even meet up with The Abomannibal Snowman which had me rolling on the floor as they just happened to have a translation machine onboard there down under earth machine . Hopefully one of you will also remember that . I can't remember the title or the year but in my searches , it never seems to come up . Any Ideas ?

I am surprised you could stomach and watch it all the way through the end. I couldn't watch it as to how stupid it was

This was the ORIGINAL story, and I actually still have the original version with James Mason (1959), and even the audio-only version (was made for radio) with Basil Rathbone. :) Journey to the Center of the Earth was the basis for all Inner World stories. I have not seen that newer one, but it looks lame to me just by looking at that poster. Why is everyone in a uniform, why do they all have guns, and what the hell is Gandalf doing in the picture? :P

The pity is the first film was by far the best:

The producers were probably hoping it would turn out to be a pilot for a TV series. That's the only explanation that I can figure for the weird cast of characters. They've even got a scary-looking albeit friendly creature that knows how to wave. :rolleye0014:

The entire basis for the story was a JOURNEY...a quest. It was supposed to be an expedition to the center of the earth and then be done with it so they could analyze data and so forth. This dumb thing looks like they are planning to somehow stay doen there for a while, fighting and shooting and palling around with pale Yeti-like creatures that look both friendly and asinine at the same time. Something that large living underground would be a predator. I bet they will have it learn English to make things convenient for the later shipping and drama with humans.

You nailed it just by the picture !!! Too funny . You are right on all accounts . I pissed my pants watching this turd expecting something good to come out of it ,,, but alas it was not to be ,,,hahaha . Can you imagine if this had become a series ? It ends on a cliff hanger or should I say cliff . I'm sure there all still there waiting for the film crew to come back and finish the shoot or maybe they packed up and went home by now ...

Watch it if you can stomach it and you will know what I mean .:smiley-015:
