Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are in final negotiations to pen the script of what is intended to be the first of a trilogy that Emmerich is slated to direct. Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original movie with Emmerich, is producing.

The duo are relatively new writers and they recently worked with Emmerich writing on Fox’s Independence Day 2, with the studio greenlighting the movie off their draft. Emmerich warmed up to Wright and Woods when his Centropolis Entertainment banner picked up a secret
Two writers with no other former experience in science fictioon/fantasy writing....other than unannounced projects

You never know, this could be a good thing. Hopefully they won't turn out to be hacks.

This is moving forward. The story will be rebooted from the beginning, not a continuation of the original. For many, that is bad news. For many, that is good news. This article from February is still valid:

Devlin said this in Portland:

The Stargate thing is a different story. We did the original Stargate as an independent movie. It was a surprise success. Shortly before the movie came out, the financiers who were frightened the movie might not do well sold the film to MGM. When the film came out, it was a hit and spawned TV shows.

Of all the projects I’ve ever done, Stargate is the only one from the beginning intended to be a trilogy. We always wanted to do parts two and three, but the thinking was they didn’t want to do anything other than the TV series. So literally for 20 years I’ve been chasing this project. Twenty years later, we can’t really do part two. We have to start over from the beginning. So let’s reboot the series, put in all the things we couldn’t the first time, and set it up properly.

Im glad they are rebooting this personally. I loved the original, and I learned to love SG-1 and Atlantis. But the way they moved away from the ancient Egyptian motif and all of the stuff they did with the Goa'uld, the Jaffa and Tokra and Ori just burned me out. And I never quite warmed up to wisecracking Jack. Daniel was my favorite character and remains so. Jack from the original movie was great though. :)

This movie might fail right off the bat if they change certain things. If they find the stargate elsewhere, they better be careful. And they need to not overdo the changes to the gate itself. It cannot look like an oversized ring frisbee with lights on it (like the Atlantis gate). Please do not give us portable dialers or extra doodads attached to the gate. And no Jaffa or symbiotes or parasitical beings.

Thoughts?

I'm looking forward to a proper remake of SG also. :encouragement: The whole Goa'uld symbiote thing was Brad Wright's derivative vision, and as you said it was tiresome. I'm glad that the remake movies won't be based on the TV shows. I've had enough of BW's version of that universe.

The Ori ruined it for me. They were clearly a creation bred out of a complete lack of creativity and simply having run out of ideas. Everything else til then was fine.

And I never quite warmed up to wisecracking Jack.

Geez, bro. Now you're just being an opportunist. :icon_lol:

Bluce: Didn't you hear? They're now intelligent and taking over the world, enslaving most humans but giving some positions of power.
OM1: I, for one, welcome our new roach overlords!

Your love for Jack is all over this site. You even expressed disappointment over the fact they watered him down in SGU.

Honestly dude, BW's version of the SG universe was played out. Hell, they were endlessly recycling the Replicator storyline over and over and over. That alone was a sign that the writers were empty of ideas. Had SGU continued as a series it would only have been a matter of time before the Replicators appeared there. :rolleye0014:

And yes, I too welcome our new roach overlords. :D

I agree, they did milk the replicator storyline a bit much. :icon_lol:

Aside from that, though, we all loved SG and SGA. The fact SGUSUCKS brought us all here is proof of that, let alone the plethora of posts supporting that view.

SG1 was more popular than the movie ever was because of the cast and writing. Whatever we have against BW and his cohorts for the arrogance with which they shoved SGU down our throats, it doesn't negate what they did before it and how much we all loved it.

Yes, but I have always said I liked the movie Jack way better than the TV series Jack. I have even called him "Wisecracking Jack". :) You may search now. The Jack of the movie had balls, and was a military soldier who acted like one. Jack took the hair off the role and made him into a jokester.

Yes, one post in 2013 negates all of your "I love Jack" posts. :anim_22:

Going back through your posts, you're a little all over the place, actually. There are posts where you compare RDA to Kurt Russel and other posts where you praise Jack's portrayal of a military colonel, albeit often bringing up that he loves to drop wisecracks. RDA's Jack may have been a wisecracking character but he also had his psychopathic moments when he reverted to pure soldier-mode, killing without remorse or hesitation when he needed to, not unlike Kurt Russel's character.

I'd always thought they struct a good balance with SG-1. It was clear they had real military advisers on the show, which you also brought up on several occasions.

There is no question that the TV show version of SG was not of the same caliber as the movie, you won't get any argument from me. All I'm saying is that SG-1 was a well made show for what it was, at least during the first 2/3 of its life.

There are many more, I just wanted to reply quickly. :) Military soldiers are much more convincing when they are deadpan and laser focused on their missions. Take Greer from SGU and make him grinning when he is on patrol and something perceptually goes missing. Drill instructors in boot camp occasionally tell jokes...for morale. But they never smile.

YES. They had that down pat. But Richard Dean Anderson argued with the writers to make Jack a less one-dimensional character. Remember, he was the name draw for the show. The military gear, the way the team would recon the planets they visited, the protocols they used, all military genuine (at least the first 4 seasons). RDA interfered with some of that.

There is no question that the TV show version of SG was not of the same caliber as the movie, you won't get any argument from me. All I'm saying is that SG-1 was a well made show for what it was, at least during the first 2/3 of its life.

Yes! I loved the show. I couldnt wait to see it every week and I have even rewatched it (the whole series). Im just not wanting THAT brought back. I do not want to see any of the characters from any of the SG shows in the new films, and no ties to any of the TV tropes Brad Wright created. No Goa'uld, no Jaffa, no Tokra no earth spaceships or Asgard or Ori or replicators or any of that.

If they do it over, we will still probably have Jack and Daniel and a General at a military installation in the US where they have taken the stargate after discovering it and learning how to activate it. There was no book that this story was based on. The book is a novelization of the movie. They could go anywhere with it, actually.
