Star Wars spin-off movie

This may have been touched on in one of the other SW threads but it seems more "official" now. That said, there's a shocking lack of details as to what this spin-off movie will be about. Obviously it takes place in the Star Wars universe but that's pretty much the only detail that's been revealed so far.

Felicity Jones to Play Lead Role in ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Movie

roflbot.jpg

Disney and Lucasfilm have tapped Oscar-nominated actress
Felicity Jones to star in the “Star Wars” standalone movie from director Gareth Edwards.

Edwards (“Godzilla”) is directing the 3D feature, with Chris Weitz penning the script. Weitz replaced Gary Whitta, who wrote the first version of the screenplay.
Plot details of the “Star Wars” spinoff are unknown.

It opens nationwide Dec. 16, 2016.

Jones’ standalone movie is one of two known “Star Wars” spinoffs in the works at Lucasfilm and Disney. “Chronicle” director Josh Trank is developing a separate “Star Wars” pic.
It’s unclear how both spinoffs will play into the upcoming seventh chapter “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” if at all.

it cannot be both a "spinoff" and "stand alone"... these people are oxymorons! they have to decide which one it is! :P

Good point. :icon_lol: They're probably hedging their bet in case it fizzles. That way it can remain a stand alone feature that they can distance from the rest of the franchise. But if it's successful they can call it a spin-off.

Spinoff = set in the star wars universe
Stand alone = no connection to the core characters of the SW films.

It's not that hard to understand, is it?

A stand alone must have no connection to the star wars mythology. :) otherwise it will be a spin-off! :D

I agree with Rac. If it is set in the Star Wars universe, it is a spinoff no matter what they call it. Stand alone is self defining. Firefly and Star Trek are stand alones.

Does Spiderman exist in the same universe as the avengers?

If they are together in the same movie, then yes. Our present day earth exists in the same universe as the Avengers, except for the Avengers, aliens or the Bifrost. :)

Stand alones would be Star Trek and Firefly, or BSG and Farscape.

My point is, while both exist in the marvel universe, you will never see a Avengers/spidey crossover due to who owns what.

I get that, and I agree. But the discussion was whether or not a spin off can also be a stand alone, and it cannot. Because of who owns what, Spidey is not OFFICIALLY in the same universe as the Avengers, and as such are stand alones. It is likely that the original BSG was set in the same universe as Star Wars but cannot be considered a spinoff because none of the characters crossed over.

How do you get the leap to BSG being in the same universe as SW?
The tech is hardly even compatible!

If you make a story about the Mandalorians, it will be, by default be in the SW universe.
But if it had nothing to do with Luke & Co, and nothing in it affect Luke & Co it's stand alone, but spun off from the greater fabric of the SW universe.

The zodiac planets of BSG (you do know I am talking about the ORIGINAL, right?) could easily be in the Outer Rim in the Star Wars galaxy. A tiny section of the Outer Rim could contain all the star systems referred to in the BSG universe, and the wars coulld all have played unaltered and not been in conflict with any of the events of the Republic. The original was clearly inspired by and intentionally associated in the media with Star Wars, even if not desired by Lucas.

I get what you are saying. But what you are saying is that it is still a spinoff. It does not stand alone because it's existence is based on Star Wars and the fabric of that universe. They could have chosen to truly separate them like the Avengers and Star Wars are separate.

Yes, I know you are speaking of the original :P
I am talking of the tech difference between the two.

Potato, potato, it doesn't matter that much in the long run :)

I kinda like the fact that they will be in the SW universe but will be using (I assume) all new characters and situations. As fictional premises go it's a HUGE universe so the story possibilities are endless. I just hope they don't screw it up.

All new! R3D3, C4PO, Yada, Lou Cloudrunner (and Princess Lena) and Chumbekka!
