Star Trek Movie (2009)

I love how they were able to warp us back to the original era without stepping on TOS! My only regret is that we will have to wait 3 or so years for a sequel instead of having a series come out of this.

I watched it in the theater and I have since watched it at home and it strikes me that this is what's missing from scifi in general and from SGU specifically:

Maturity. Sure, sex is fun and a part of (especially) young people's lives but it has it's place along with a myriad of things like responsibility, self discovery, duty, honor, camaraderie & humor. Oh, this sort of sounds like SG1 or SGA, doesn't it? And these are things that are sorely lacking in SGU.

I don't get how mature that is to be guided by your loins but that pretty much defines SGU. Star Trek, the new movie, however presents a whole new galaxy of possibility. I only wish they were going to make a series out of this! We sooooo need it especially when I think so many of us were wanting/needing/hoping for it (and did not get it) in SGU!

Would a series work for this? Im not sure it could!

I love the new movie too! I thought they did a great reboot and covered the rolling back to this new timeline very well. I have been a Trek fan since the original series which (Im aging myself), I watched LIVE. As quiet as its kept, TOS was the shortest lived Star Trek series ever to air (3 yrs). I have to wait more than 10 years for the movie Star Trek (the first reboot).

This new crew is PERFECT for the new Trek. But because of who they are, I dont think they would be open to serializing the show with this crew. I think a series would work as long as it was a different crew on a different ship in the new timeline. I doubt that Chris Pine or Zoe Saldana and especially not Zachary Quinto would do a TV series. Their careers are on an upswing in the movies (especially Saldana), and TV would be a step down for them.

Wait. What? I was under the impression that a new Trek movie was coming out sometime next year. That's what they were saying last year.

I agree. This new Trek isn't going to the small screen. I have to admit that I don't really want it to be serialized on the small screen. It's tailor made for the big screen. It has a great epic feel like Star Wars.

Nah, not going to TV for a good while

The only way i can see them making a TV version is if we get a new crew. Say we get the crew of teh "Defiant" which instead of being taken into the "Dark Mirror" universe, we see a new crew. It wouldn't really be the same.

I wonder if they'll move along the same note, and eventually give us a new TNG. I'm scared to think of what they'd do to Picard given that the series Picard and the movie Picard are two separate entities really :P

I do have one thing to smile at, Rachel Weisz wants to be a part of the new Trek movie :D I've had a fanboy crush on her ever since "The Mummy" and i think she'd make a brilliant Romulan :D

While on a Star Trek note, here's a little thing i filmed a few days ago from Star Trek Legacy to show a friend how they mixed the music from Wrath of Khan into the game. (go James Horner)

I loved the Trek movie, bought the DVD too. Which I rarely do. If they would make a series out of it they would re do the cast. Just like Stargate:icon_e_wink:

Yep, the sequel is supposed to come out next year, if I recall correctly, but they are still in preproduction.

OK, let me say up front that I liked the movie. But how did you all miss the big WTF moment at the end. So they take an ensign that just graduated from the academy and give him the flagship of the fleet! Ya, I'm buying that. I was willing to let it slide that he got command at all during the movie, but to give him permanent command is ridiculous. No navy in the history of navies would do that.

I didn't like that either, but whatever :P it's forgivable given how great the rest of the movie is.

The novelization has an even bigger WTF moment. The dog that Scotty beamed away and lost? Yeah, it appears on teh Enterprise Transporter pad at the end :|

I'm willing to forgive almost anything plot-wise if I love the characters, and I do love these characters. The whole movie is just a fun ride - great action, interesting overall story, and really great characters (great casting too). So yeah, I can forgive that weird non-realistic inconsistency at the end. It fit with the feel and flow of the movie even if it doesn't make sense in any reality.

It is definitely done in the non-naval branches.

Field promotions are often given to soldiers who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities. But they are always reviewed by HQ and approved. All such commissions are temporary unless merit makes it permanent (done by a military tribunal). That scenario is definitely possible. His first field command and he saves Earth? Yep, anything is possible after that. Its not like they made him an Admiral or a General. He only commands his ship and its crew.

Well, Kirk would've been a Lieutenant like the rest of the Academy grads had he not done his retarded God Mode Haxx on the Kobayashi Maru, so it would've only been a promotion of 3 ranks after he graduated. But between you and me, I would've rewritten a lot of the second act to have it make a bit more sense (and lose the stupid ice monster chase).

Well if we recall from Wrath of Khan, Kirk did indeed get away with his haxx in the original timeline. He even got a 'commendation' for original thinking.

Personally, the part that i was most bothered by was the Spock/Uhura kiss scene because it was just so.... *shudder* At least Quinto ployed it off VERY well i must say.

Another thing that made me groan in distaste was just how often and badly Kirk would get slapped around and he just doesn't seem to be debilitated AT ALL by such profound and damaging asskickings :P

But all this is forgivable... just for putting Karl Urban as Bones :D BEST actir choice EVAR.

BTW if no one know, Paul McGillion is in the movie. He's in the scene where the crew is boarding the ship.

He wanted to be Scotty :D

I'm not sure... perhaps if they wanted an older style scotty it could have worked, but Simon Pegg did quite well with the neurotic Scotty :P He did brilliantly with the little alien dude.

That was what I was thinking and why I didn't see it as a wtf moment.

Not only was he outstanding while in command, we were told at the beginning of the movie that his aptitude test scores were off the charts, AND he was the only person ever to beat the Kobayashi Maru test (yes he cheated but that was the only way anyone could beat it). Not to mention that his dad was probably considered to be quite a hero. Mix in the fact that they are in the 23rd century and a lot of things have changed - world peace, presumably little or no poverty on earth, a federation of inter-planetary peoples?? It just wan't that big of a stretch for me to believe that if I can believe the rest. :)

I hated the Spock/Uhura kiss and their entire relationship. It was the one thing in the movie that made no sense at all to me. Spock as I knew him would never do that. And even though I accepted their first kiss where they were alone in a turbolift, I utterly hated the second one where Uhura leaves her post and runs to play kissy face with her bf Spock in front of Kirk and the entire crew in the transporter. Yeah, I bet Spock would do that.

As for Zoe Saldana, I thought she was ok as Uhura but I prefer Nichelle Nichols. I hated how everyone was going on and on about the new and improved Uhura as if the old one had been a joke. She hadn't been a joke to me even though there was all the 60's sexism reflected in her character and all the characters of TOS. So, she went from glorified phone operator to love interest. Wow, I'm so impressed. I'd be more impressed if we had seen her actually do her job than be a supportive, good girlfriend.

On a personal level, I don't like Zoe's constant bitchface and way too thin body. I don't like how proudly she proclaimed that she had never watched TOS and didn't intend to either and I HATED Avaturd and anyone connected with it. (Except for Michelle Rodriguez in that tank top. Call me!)

And to think, they added the Spock/Uhura thing as a throwback to the old TOS fans LOL

I personally don't think it worked at all. The elevator scene was cringe worthy apart from Quinto playing the stoic Vulcan so well. Uhura just comes off as a desperate character with no real focus. i mean... what was the most important thing? When she gets onto the bridge and replaces the com officer there. That's it? Bah.

Admittedly it's difficult to think of a good plot for her to follow since com officer isnt' exactly a huge role. I do think the original Uhura played it with less "sass" and more calm reservation which i liked.

In many ways it did end up being Star Trek 90210, but it did it with explanation and a level of maturity that doesn't make it seems like stupid teens. Like Scotty, he's obviously cantankerous, but he's also incredibly smart. Kirk is full of attitude and arrogance, but he's willing to take his beatings when he deserves it. By far the best of them all was McCoy though. Karl Urban sold that role SO well it's not even funny. I'd watch another Star Trek Movie JUST for him :D

I don't think they added the Spock/Uhura relationship as a throwback to the old TOS fans. Those characters didn't have a relationship in TOS. And TPTB said in interviews, that they wanted to introduce a new aspect, surprise the audience, and so on.
I'm 99% positive that i read that they added the Spock/Uhura relationship because there were hints of it in the old series. Argh, if only i could remember where exactly i read it since i know it wasn't just a fan or a blogger, but rather an interview.
