Star Trek Continues: The real Star Trek reboot you have been missing...

I just discovered these gems, set in the TOS era and written in the original Trek fashion. Along with Star Trek Phase II, they represent:

Star Trek Phase II: The continuation of the original Five Year Mission of the Enterprise.

http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/

Star Trek Continues: A completely different project than Phase II, but looks and production values are better.

http://www.startrekcontinues.com/episodes/#.U-3DAdZ3_FU

Farragut Films which is running Star Trek Continues is better funded, and this one is arguably the best TOS portrayal of the two. I have known about Star Trek Phase II for years, since when it was called Star Trek New Voyages. But it has taken a year between episodes in some cases. It has starred several original TOS actors including George Takei, Walter Koenig, and others. They continued the series from year 4 of Enterprise's Five Year Mission, and there are 8 episodes starting with episode 4 x 01. Worth a watch.

Now a goodie...Farragut Films has not only created a very entertaining Enterprise show with Kirk and the original crew, but they have created a NEW show called Starship Farragut with a different captain and a different ship (Constitution Class like Enterprise NCC-1701). The Farragut designation is NCC-1675. This well written episode is as good as any of the TOS episodes, perhaps a bit better. Acting is fair, but the feel and the writing will not bore you. Kick back and enjoy this (commercial free except in the beginning)! This is not the Enterprise, this is the Farragut. There are 7 more of these available:

Another one...Starship Exeter:

What these episodes mean is that when there is REAL interest in preserving something, fans will go and make it. Kickstarter is the current go-to entity for funding, but they are a sham in my opinion. They stand there like a bank, and they make money on every project whether it funds it's goal or not. These Star Trek episodes and series you are seeing here are just a sample of the best of them, But they actually got MADE. They are all written on par or superior to the original TOS episodes, with better video and audio and special effects, but the actors are decidedly average. But if you loved TOS, you will love these. Complete with flashing lights and do-nothing consoles. :)

This episode from Star Trek Continues continues the "Mirror, Mirror" episode in TOS, from the perspective of the other side (with Evil Spock). The original series sent our good crew back to the normal universe, but what happened when the mirror Kirk was returned to the bad universe with Spock knowing about the Tantalus Field, and Marlena now loyal to Spock? That is what this episode is about.

This is one of the best STC episodes. :) They even show the end of the Mirror Universe scene in the transporter room where Kirk implores Spock to see how illogical it is to support the Terran Empire, and the dialogue is word for word, gesture for gesture IDENTICAL to the original episode, but with the STC actors. Enough of me babbling, here is the entire episode for you to watch. :)

:) They are working with more money than the Phase II folks, and they have better talent (writing). I felt the same way as you did...amazing. These newer episodes are higher in production value than the originals. And they are also in HD. Everything is faithful to the original, down to every detail (colors, lighting levels, camera angles, ship flyby vectors...etc.). The actors are also VERY well chosen.

Watch more of them! I thought they were all excellent. :)

TRIVIA: These are intentionally shot in 4:3 ratio to match the original experience. 35mm grain was digitally added to the HD footage to give it the feel of the original. The new sets were constructed to the original blueprints (Phase II did this as well). Some of the "old" displays are actually monitors playing video of the do-nothing consoles of the series. The hand props have been faithfully duplicated (tricorders, phasers, communicators, etc). Uniforms were specifically color matched to the originals.

I recommend this episode for your next viewing. It has the actor who played "Who Mourns for Adonis" in it, reprising his character. :) They explain his "rapid ageing". Truly a work of writing. :) MUST SEE.

FYI, the Scotty character in this series is Chris Doohan....one of James Doohan's TWIN sons. In many ways, the crew of this series is better matched to the originals than the new Abrams crew. But anyway, this episode is exceptionally well written (entire episode):

I don't know if I would call it a reboot, though. It's just a continuation, maintaining the same production quality and sets as the original series.

Yep. :) They actually have to do post processing to make the video appear to be AS BAD as the originals (vs un-grained HD). Its a continuation, and not a reboot.

Yup . That's the one I just watched . EXCELLENT !!!

All of them are great. :) The writing is what stands out next to the choice of these actors. Not too shabby!

Yes . I was noticing the lighting and shadows . Wow !!! Amazing really when you think about it . Going backwards technically to go forwards and end up forward even though you've gone backwards to look forward or is it backwards but moved forwards . I'm confused .,,, Anyway . It's frigginly amazingly wonderful to see this continuation of my most favorite show of all time ever . TOST .

Go ahead ,,, Back up

Misogyny is not something Star Trek TOS handled well, IMO. This episode is one for the ladies rights, and human rights in general. It has an Orion slave girl named Lolani at the center of the story. VERY well written. I am not sure this episode would have been done in 1966-1969. Also, this ship has a ship's counselor, which might have been part of the original series had the era not been an unequal time for women (and minorities). Dr McCoy in this show is not as "animated" as the original Dr McCoy, but he does a fair job. Scotty is down pat...even sounds like him. And this Captain Kirk is faithful to the original...to a tee. He even has the same build and hair color.

Star Trek is gay, but I will watch the posted videos.

Interesting...so Star Trek TOS, with it's horny Captain Kirk, short skirts for women and hot females is "gay"?  Tell me Jim...what EXACTLY about Star Trek is "gay", and if parts of it are, so what? Are you a homophobe?

Lack of character growth and change from one episode to the next. Reset button hit at the end of each episode. Maoist enforced happiness (mostly in TNG). Unrealistic depiction of humanity and human interaction (again mostly TNG).

I liked the videos, especially the first one.

That was an honest answer. :) But that was also how the original show was written, if you watched it. You never got any sense of "progress" over the Five Year Mission. Each episode was a separate story, not really connected in any linear way. You could completely randomize them and be in the same place at the end of season 3. I thought they had the humanity and human interaction down pretty well from what I see out there today. Where I live, it very much reflects the diversity and social interactions that I see in this show.

There is another ambitious and authentic Star Trek TOS fan series at Star Trek Phase II, but the site is broken at the moment. That project actually had some of the original actors in it as cameos, as well as actors from TNG and DS9. But it is not nearly as well done as Star Trek Continues.

Star Trek Continues strength is the writing and the special effects. I can tolerate amateur acting with quality writing and special effects.

Agreed. That is why I watched them. There are more of the Farragut episodes than Enterprise episodes. The first video you liked was from The Farragut. More are here:

http://www.starshipfarragut.com/episodes.html

Watch "The Captaincy" first, because it sets you up for the rest of the show. There are only three Enterprise episodes, but there are seven Farragut episodes. They are as good as the TOS show. Different captain, different ship, but the same type of ship and a different crew which includes an Andorian. :)

Scotty is bang on because it's James Doohan's son !

I see they changed the Doctor . The other guy was way too tall lol .
