So....who is your favorite Vulcan?

Just a semi-silly question where you name your favorite Vulcan from the Star Trek TV/movie universe and explain why a little. If you wish, you can also name your least favorite Vulcan too.

Favorite?

For me it is a close race between Spock and Tuvok. And while Spock is of course THE Vulcan I think I'm going to give it to Tuvok by a hair. He just seemed to capture all the tones, inflections, mannerisms and everything perfectly and he did it consistently in a seven year series where he was a focal character.

Honorable mention - T'Pol because in the first two seasons she did play it well and because Jolene Blalock publicly called out the producers of Enterprise on the wrong writing of her character.

Least favorite?

I have to say Sybok....that character was just naff. Then again that whole film was a colossal dud (Star Trek V).

Dishonorable mention - T'Les (T'Pol's mother on ENT). she got the speech, mannerisms and everything dead wrong and felt like a suburban soccer mom instead of a Vulcan matriarch.

Spock. But I consider the BEST Vulcan to be Sarek

Fair enough. Sarek is also a strong candidate for favorite Vulcan as he in the appearances we saw did portray Vulcan mannerisms et al very consistently.

I am just shocked. SHOCKED...that you did not mention Sarek. :) To me, Sarek epitomizes the essence of what a pure Vulcan is. Then comes Tuvok, another pure Vulcan. T'Pol gets a fail because she showed way too much emotion and the lame excuse about her condition made no difference. She should have been made a different race for the show. Tuvok was a consummate Vulcan with a breadth of character wider than Sarek, but he lacked the presence Sarek had. Spock is still my "favorite", but he wasnt the best Vulcan IMO. My least favorite was Sybok, followed by Kirstie Alley's Saavik, then the other Saavik actress in the movies. I liked T'Les because she was again the stoic, direct Vulcan. Also for me, a mention goes to Ensign Voorik from Voyager.

Ah, you added him in your list. Good move. :) From his very first appearance in TOS (actually as a Romulan), his dramatic acting background gave him presence as a Vulcan that is matched only by T'Pau from TOS (and later in The Voyage Home).

I plumb forgot Sarek... :). Hence my later agreement on him. In his own way he was perhaps the most "Vulcan" Vulcan in all Star Trek. but I still have to go Tuvok because he not only was the consummate Vulcan but maintained it over seven seasons on a show where he was a focal character. In that respect he had to play his character consistently for a longer time than any of the others except perhaps Nimoy if you add up TOS and the films.

As to T'Pol, the Honorable Mention was based on her work in the first two seasons, where she was very restrained and such. Also because of her calling out the producers over the bad writing.

T'Les really did not come off as Vulcan to me - all her mannerisms were wrong. She used contractions in her speech and her tones of voice sounded to me more like a soccer mom than a stoic matriarch.

Spock obviously. The others were all a bit too one note, or better yet, they felt a bit too sterile and clinical to the point of being silly. Tuvok was ok but a bit bland. Spock was interesting on his own and played off nicely with that whole three muskateers.

I mean this question is a bit like asking who people's favourite SG1 member was. O'neill is just going to be the most popular answer.

I think a more interesting question would be why we don't like the human characters as much as the nonhuman characters in trek for the most part (speaking of Spock, Data, the Doctor here). Not only that, we have this weirdly ironical thing where we like the nonhuman characters more than the humans but those nonhuman characters are striving towards or struggling towards various aspects of attaining humanity or grasping with some human side to there. Hmmmmmm....what does that say about us?

Tuvok.
Because Tim Russ is a joker by all accounts, and playing that kind of character shows skill.

Saavik was half Romulan. I personally liked the Romulan characters better.

Me too. The devilish look of the Vulcans, but with guts and emotions and aggression. They seemed predatory, to the Vulcan pacifism.
