Roberto Orci out as “Trek 3” director

Roberto Orci is beaming off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise onStar Trek 3. Rampant rumors are swirling and I’ve confirmed there is fire behind the smoke that he won’t be directing. I even hear that Edgar Wright and others are on a short list to take the job. Orci stays on the project as producer, I’ve heard.

People want Jonathan Frakes to direct it

Isn't Orci the dick that we excoriated awhile back? If so, I'm not too broken up by this news. Doesn't help that he's still a producer though as they actually have more creative control than directors in many respects.

As for Frakes, he's probably a long shot at best. No matter though as all I care about is getting a quality product in the end so whoever can deliver that gets my vote.

That was it. I knew it was something stupid but couldn't remember it off the top o' my head. At any rate, the less involvement the man has with #3 the better, but still, his remaining as a producer doesn't thrill me.

By the sound of the article it looks like they aren't even going to start recreating the sets just yet. So, the start of filming in both Vancouver and South Korea looks like a no-go for February 15th.

Why did they not save the sets? Everyone knew that there would be a 3rd movie.

Orci is the one who told all the ranting Star Trek fans to f*ck off. He is an arrogant sonofabitch and he was saying stuff like "That is why I get to write movies and they dont" sorta stuff. He is also a genuine Star Trek fan and I think his love for that would be in direct opposition to JJ Abram's vision of where Trek is going. If I had to guess, I am betting that Abrams fired him and not Disney. Orci would have undone many of the changes Abrams did to Trek. The direction, the storyline and even the character interactions. He was the one who wanted William Shatner on board too (I dont think that is going to happen).

Trek is basically dead to me right now, in terms of the movies. I like the cast they have chosen, but just about everything else is completely ruined. The entire Trek universe was trashed in only two movies.

I'm not a fan of this series of movies, but I seem to of read somewhere that they destroyed the Enterprise set because they needed to film the command centre for another vessel. I guess studio space was at a premium?

As for Robert Orci, I know him more for "Fringe" and "H-5O".

If they move to a place where they can unite all of their sets permanently, then there could be a chance for another 'Star Trek' series.
Just thunking of course.

These people making the new Star Trek view television as an inferior medium even though one can tell a lot long story in one season of a television series than in one movie. Even a miniseries has much more story room.

I agree with this. But what has happened now in the Industry is the packaging of the valuable properties into big-budget theatrical productions so that they can bring in the big bucks. In order to turn a profit on a TV series, it has to pay for it's production in some way. The traditional way is advertising, but now there are additional revenue makers made possible by game tie-ins and product sales.

Storytelling is just formulaic these days with a few exceptions. Both the NuTrek films are pure formulaic garbage. If the current cast, ship and events were suddenly made into a weekly TV series...how would you tell it long term? Starting out with transwarp beaming, the meaning of space travel changes pretty much right off the bat. Dumb looking Klingons with steampunk warbirds (do they even cloak?), no Vulcan homeworld, red matter, and of course there are tribbles all over the Federation, on earth and just about everywhere...and they can make more magic blood. Doesnt anybody remember what happens when you feed tribbles?

Well I did NOT like Khan being an anglo - he was INDIAN (hindu I think) in the original and there were many good actors who were the right ethnicity ( Naveen Andrews from Once in Wonderland comes to mind as a wonderful Khan! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004710/?ref_=tt_cl_t5 ) so not heartbroken to see Orci out.

I actually enjoy the new Trek movies - I totally love the alternative time line story so I can accept the changes. :P

Peter Weller as the bad guy (and Carole Marcus's father) was a let-down -he played the head of terra prime in the final episodes of Enterprise - a terrorist- basically the same one note character he played in Into Darkness. :P

Not sure I'd be that dismissive.

Lin is a good directorial choice. For one thing expect to kiss the shaky cam and lens flares goodbye.

Now of course the next challenge is the script - if it is not properly respectful of the way Trek should feel and/or lacks intelligence then it won't matter who is directing.

The problems are with the NuTrek Universe...not the characters, not the producer or director. It is ruined at the core. Its ALREADY time to reboot it again. Things have to be undone or it will never be right.

Not liking that the director of the recent Fast and the Furious series is gonna try to do Trek, physics of FF is absolutely awful and the dialogue so hammy and cheesy when trying to be all macho and manly and crap. I prefer depth rather than flash (which was FF, please don't try to argue that FF has depth). I read somewhere they're trying to make Trek like Guardians of the Galaxy. There's a time and place for that and Trek is not it. Star Wars? Sure. But Trek? No thanks.

Hang on. FF is fictional superhero-style action. It's not meant to resemble anything realistic. Its mockery of physics is quite intentional. :D
