Ode to Boutique PC Builders

After the System 76 thread a couple of days ago where I kind of diverged into Falcon Northwest, the whole topic of these types of businesses came to mind.

Boutique PC builders are very much a niche cottage industry. Basically they specialize in custom hand built PCs that typically are extreme bleeding edge. While the number of them rises and falls over the years there never are a lot, as really the market is pretty small for this sort of thing. But here are some thoughts I have on some of them....

Alienware: Yes I know they went corporate and sold out to Dell. And to me they "died" that day. But before that they were a boutique and indeed together with Falcon Northwest they were the "dynamic duo" of boutiques. They were noteworthy in their day not just for the funky alien motif cases but for pushing hardware further than even good sense would indicate.

Today's Alienware still looks funky but lost its soul to Dell. Sad, but I'll still lift a toast to the old Alienware.

Voodoo: In its way this is more tragic than Alienware. Voodoo did some awesome stuff back in the day (like the Rage) but sold out to HP and nowadays it is completely gone. Alienware at least sort of lives on but Voodoo is dead. Still and all a toast to when it was good!

Velocity Micro: This one is still around and they have done good stuff and still do good stuff. A lot of their stuff has its roots in machines designed for extreme CAD work. They are a bit more "mainstream" than your typical boutique but respect nonetheless.

Origin PC: These guys excite me some because to a lot of the enthusiast market this is the True Alienware. That is because Origin PC was founded by a group of Alienware system designers and builders who were not willing to go to Dell when Alienware was acquired in 2009. And like they used to do at Alienware they are pushing the envelope - for example in 2014 they designed new tower cases that allow the motherboard to be mounted at multiple different angles to promote the best possible component fit and airflow. Keep an eye on this group because they are making good sounds!

And, of course there is the granddaddy of the bunch....

Falcon Northwest: The oldest of the boutiques and still the best. They actually started out in 1992 designing and building flight simulators for pilot training alongside their gamer enthusiast PCs. Like Origin and Alienware they are compulsive at pushing the limits and indeed have worked with manufacturers like ASUS, Intel and NVidia and helped them evolve their own offerings. They are also known for innovative cooling systems, case designs and their distinctive high grade paint jobs. They also have an extremely high end service experience.

Have to toast them too....like fine wine they have gotten better with age!

It's a small industry but in a world where even the "quality" products in tech tend to come off robot operated assembly lines and just lack that "human" feel the little houses like these warm my heart - they remind me why I was a bit of a geek in my misspent youth!

Here is a great example of what these boutiques do:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonev...rfection-with-some-help-from-nvidias-titan-z/

It takes a certain form of insanity to attempt to put NVidia's Titan-Z (the ultimate beast of GTX cards) into a small form factor box. It takes a bigger form of insanity to actually make it work properly and then overclock it to boot....

Yep...what I love about PC building is the customization. You can have a rig put together like nobody else (Tripler has such a rig), and with it you can play your favorite games and blow away even the most powerful game console on EVERY level. Graphics, sound, even games that require a camera are done best on a PC.

Dell absorbed them hoping to add some cred to their XPS line of gaming computers, but that move failed. The move to Dell took the "cool" out of it.

What's going on with your rig now? Is the Windows side okay? My Windows partition is rock solid now. :) I play all my games on it.

Exactly. Everyone knew what would happen when the sale was announced - and it did.

If you want to see the "real Alienware", look at Origin PC. As I said, it was founded by Alienware techs and builders who did not want to be with Dell.

See, this is the kind of thing a boutique does:

And this:

The Tiki Z is in its own way the quintessential enthusiast PC. It does something which at least on the surface is kind of insane (putting the Titan Z in an ITX format). But Falcon got it to not only work but overclocked it to boot. It uses a variant on the SilverStone 600W PSU that Falcon actually helped SilverStone develop, dual SSDs in RAID 0, an ASUS ITX form factor motherboard that again ASUS developed together with Falcon and even has Intel's "Devil's Canyon" class CPU. All this in that small case. Something tells me you would never see Dell or HP push the envelope like that! Minitower ITX full speed gaming on 4K displays...this unit makes any gaming console look amateurish in comparison.

Origin PC on their side developed the Millennium case which lets the user mount the motherboard in any number of different ways to get more use out of the interior space and optimize cooling. They don't have the cred of Falcon yet where OEMs like ASUS come to them for design consulting but I can see them getting there. The PC in the video is vintage gamer PC - big, brawny and lots of bays and ports! They'll have growing pains (as the video evidences) but keep an eye on these guys!

It's not to bad really other than windows taking forever to load and it still stalls everso slightly on startup . Since removing avast premium I have no more drop outs though I noticed netflix is still a little jerky duri playback . I'm guess the jerky is an AMD thing . I plan on overclocking the crap out of it soon . It can take it as thermals are not a problem with this case . 6 case fans and the Gelid Heatsink work great at keepin things cool . And its real quiet also .

I might be something else. You mentioned you have sniffers and other stuff installed in Windows. Did you remove them too? Run Windows as vanilla as possible.

Just Avast Free and Secure line . Nothing else . I think Windows did something when we put it to dual boot . I remember seeing a quick screen one time but the puter rebooted before I could see what it was and ever since it has super slow reboots in windoze but not in Mint . Wanna move this conversation back to my post of bottleneckin perhaps ? We've hijacked the original post on boutique puter builds lol !

If you do move probably move the relevant posts too - it will help keep you informed on the progress of things.

As to Windows, being in dual boot should have zero effect on its bootup or performance. Is it a fresh Windows install into the dual boot or the pre-existing one? I ask because possibly the boot manager you're using could have played wrong with an existing Windows install and partly corrupted the boot sector/instructions.

To my understanding the price point on the TITAN Z has come down a bit so Falcon was able to get the starting price on the Tiki Z down as well. Now it starts at $3714 and the rig is already tricked out so there is little to add.

How much to the parts add up to?

Every component is high end and the case is custom manufactured. Then there is the paint work, the tuning, burn in, cabling work and such. Also the warranty and the hand building work and such. Actually $3700 for those components is not crazy.

The TITAN Z itself is $2800, the Devil's Canyon CPU is $365 bin pricing. Not sure on the rest.
