Not a paranoid conspiracy theory, its reality:

http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/samsungs-warning-our-smart-tvs-record-your-living-room-chatter/

It concerns the voice-recognition feature, vital for everyone who finds pressing a few buttons on their remote far too tiresome.

The wording, first spotted by the Daily Beast, first informs you that the company may "capture voice commands and associated texts so that we can provide you with Voice Recognition features and evaluate and improve the features."

This is almost understandable. It's a little like every single customer service call, supposedly recorded to make your next customer service call far, far more enjoyable.

However, the following words border on the numbing: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition."

The manufacturers are not behind these trends, obviously. Governments are. Regardless of manufacturer, the elements of "now" devices are starting to include some new "features" I cannot see anyone wanting or needing:

  • "Always listening" devices (Moto X, Xbox One, Samsung smartTVs)
  • "Always watching" devices (Xbox One. several TVs and other devices which use gesture control). This includes the AirView feature of Samsung premium phones and tablets, as well as many laptops with integrated webcams.
  • Closed system devices
  • Software that transcripts voice
  • Geolocation/Location services/Triangulation
Who wants these "features", and why are some of them not disclosed or even MANDATORY? The governments only need for the biggest players to comply, since they have a much wider reach than smaller ones. If any website or mobile device manufacturer starts to reach more than a billion people, the men in black suits will show up with "suggestions".

as jim said on another thread- we've voluntarily given up our privacy rights. technology is slowly erasing "expectation" of privacy. SCOTUS stepped in on the unlawful seizure of cellphones (police need a warrant to search them) thus saving both the 4th and 5th amendments to fight another day. some places are advocating drone-hunting- a little town in colorado was planning to issue permits and the FAA said they couldn't - using the excuse it was bad to shoot guns in the air-no one in the FAA must be a bird hunter :P

as to drones- a number that have been found/seen hovering over bathroom & bedroom windows in various city suburbs have been brought down - their owners were traced and charged with being a peeping tom (a class E felony in some states- which requires one to be listed as a sexual offender) so it is not illegal per se to shoot at, or in other ways, bring down a drone -- the closer it is to someone's house - the more lgal rights the homeowner has to remove it.

I am more concerned with HOW this technology is being introduced. They call this peeping shit "features", and charge EXTRA for them, when we do not want them and cannot purchase the item without them. I will never purchase a Nest enabled appliance (Google owns Nest which is the largest manufacturer od smart appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, interior lighting and HVAC systems. These devices can monitor what you put in and out of your refrigerator, what you buy, when you buy it, and how long it takes you to consume the goods. The washing machines can monitor how often you wash your clothes, what detergents you use, and with minor tweaking, it could actually collect DNA samples!!! If you rent, mandatory devices such as smoke detectors could easily be fitted with listening devices and connect to your own wireless to transmit the data. Your cellphone already will make calls over your wireless if you are connected to it. It has access to this connection even when you are not on a call.

People are not paying attention to what is happening. Those cameras on the roads are not manned by people, they are merely optical sensors for COMPUTERS which are reading license plates, matching faces with vehicles via biometrics, tracking movements over time for individuals. The system is not even close to being overwhelmed. Again, NOT a conspiracy theory, it is reality:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-spies-on-millions-of-cars-1422314779

Officials have publicly said that they track vehicles near the border with Mexico to help fight drug cartels. What hasn’t been previously disclosed is that the DEA has spent years working to expand the database “throughout the United States,’’ according to one email reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Many state and local law-enforcement agencies are accessing the database for a variety of investigations, according to people familiar with the program, putting a wealth of information in the hands of local officials who can track vehicles in real time on major roadways.

The database raises new questions about privacy and the scope of government surveillance. The existence of the program and its expansion were described in interviews with current and former government officials, and in documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. It is unclear if any court oversees or approves the intelligence-gathering.

Private drones are fair game as far as I am concerned. :) There are many other ways to kill a drone other than a firearm.

Both of my brothers used to take off their underwear and stick their genitalia up to the screen when they would rerun Lucile Ball shows. One of my brothers had to adopt (his wife is sterile) and the other one has like 10 kids, so it probably did not cause any problems. Just imagine, if they company that made the TV could see them.

Well, in the original book "1984" if you remember correctly the TV actually looked at you as you watched it.

Whether in 1948, 1984, or 2014! Do we expect anything to change? Enquiring people want to know - maybe a little too much!!!
